Supes approve plan for Community Center sign

A plan to use redevelopment money to replace the aging community center sign with an LED message board was approved by city supervisors on Thursday.Carson City Manager Larry Werner said city planners and chamber officials will now begin working out the details, including the sign’s size and what features it should have.He said one idea was to try create a two-part sign with one more static screen displaying city boards and commission events and the other a revolving board to scroll through community events.Commissioners agreed they will also have to create an operating committee to decide what goes on the sign and determine who controls its operation.The board set aside $72,876 in redevelopment money for the project. Supervisors must still approve the design and other features before contracts to build and install it can be signed.The board also approved $99,595 in water-sewer funds to study water and sewer rates in Carson City. FCS Group will review and analyze current rate data, cost of service and policies to determine who should pay what share of costs of providing water and sewer services.Staff says overall rates won’t increase but that individual components of rates for different categories may be adjusted up or down.The board also canvassed the recount of the Board of Supervisors’ Ward 4 race, certifying that Jim Shirk did win the seat from Molly Walt.
