Senator Square: Carson High teacher bestowed national honor

The Department of the Navy has selected Carson’s Frederick Jones as the NJROTC Area 13 Citizenship Development Teacher of the Year.According to a letter from the Department of Navy to Principal Ron Beck, “Freddy was selected from a group of 150 instructors from 13 states including Hawaii and Alaska, along with Japan and Guam. In Area 13, there is no better instructor than LCDR Jones, he has directed the program with total abandonment, investing every ounce of Navy professionalism, leadership and solid mentorships that he has to cadets, students and other instructors alike.”Congratulations to Lt. Cmdr. Jones from all of us at Carson High.NJROTC INSPECTIONThe Naval Junior ROTC Unit of CHS will conduct its annual Military Inspection on Friday. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Carson High School’s large gymnasium.It includes a pass-in-review of the company and performances by two drill teams. Cadet Lt. Cmdr. Mathew DeMar will lead the cadets in the review. Capt. Daniel Wenceslao, Area 13 manager from Marysville, Wash., will be the inspecting officer along with Sgt. Tyler Hughes, a 2006 graduate of Carson High School, currently stationed at Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Center, Pickel Meadows, Calif.The NJROTC Unit invites parents, family and friends of the cadets to attend this public event, which should be completed by 1:45 p.m. They extend a special invitation to veterans, members of the Carson City School District, supporting organizations, and staff members who may have a prep period during the ceremony. The junior class is hosting its class event at the Carson City Ice Rink from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday. For every skater who attends, $1 will go directly to next year’s prom fund. Everyone is welcome to attend and support the class of 2014.Our Carson High School band is having its annual winter concert 7 p.m. Monday. It will feature the string and wind ensembles on that day at the community center for a small admission fee of $3. The jazz and concert bands are featured at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a $3 admission fee. This is a big opportunity for our community to come support our CHS arts and listen to some great tunes in the process!The Carson High School rifle team will compete at home at 3 p.m. Thursday. Our NJROTC has done very well in past seasons and have even won national titles. Throughout the school year, students lose many items, some of which are very valuable, such as cell phones, jewelry, money, etc. Ms. Sheets has requested businesses and or private individuals to donate items that could celebrate the kind acts of these students. The following businesses have already contributed Starbucks, Gold Dust Bowling Center, and Pizza Factory. If you can donate to this worthy cause, please contact Ms. Sheets in the attendance office at 775-283-1910.BOWLERS WINCongratulations to the CHS Bowling team, which won its first match against McQueen on Wednesday night at the National Bowling Stadium. The next match will be in Reno on Tuesday against Reed. MASH PROGRAMNEEDS DONATIONThe Mandatory Academic Study Hall is in need of some donations for an upcoming enrichment activity. The tie-dye activity will be held in early January when students return from break. The program is in need of donations of white T-shirts or cash to purchase them. More than 90 shirts are needed of all sizes, small to extra-large. We just had auditions for the Northern Zone Honor Band. A record number 48 students from Carson sent in 52 auditions. Students from nine Northern Nevada schools will compete using their knowledge and ability to defend the Constitution.The program is directed by the Center for Civic Education. This is the first year CHS has offered the class and also the first year the students have competed. The top three schools at the district competition will advance to the state competition in Las Vegas in March.SENIOR SPOTLIGHTCHS is proud to spotlight Sophie Holmes. Sophie maintains a weighted grade-point average of 4.48.She is a National Merit semi-finalist and has applied for the Naval Junior ROTC scholarship. She has been part of the high school and Tigersharks swim teams for the last seven years. She also helps with coaching the Swim America program through Tigersharks.Sophie has also been part of the National Honor Society for the last three years.As an interest, she is learning how to dance ballet for her senior project. Sophie is hoping to get accepted into the University of Pennsylvania and plans on majoring in economics.
