Prep Roundup: Five wrestlers advance

The Carson High wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to today’s day 2 of the Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center. Kyle Sharp (120 pounds), Jordan Luhrs (170 pounds) and Brady Rivera (182 pounds) all went 3-1 on the day to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Brady O’Keefe and Nicholas Lani, both at 138 pounds, went 4-1 to stay alive in the consolation bracket.“All five wrestled super today,” coach Tim McCarthy said. “Most of the kids had a good showing.“We will see what happens tomorrow.”VARSITY BASKETBALLCarson starts 0-2The Carson boys basketball dropped its first two games of the Under Armour Holiday Classic in San Diego.On Thursday, Carson lost to Mayfair, Calif., 53-36. Leading Carson was Rafe King with 17 points. Matt Nolan added 14 for the Senators.On Wednesday, Carson fell to Mesa, Ariz., 55-30. Kyle Steele lead Carson with seven points. King also added seven. Coach Carlos Mendeguia said Mesa is the No. 1 team in the state. He said Mesa featured a 6-foot-10-inch junior who has committed to the University of Arizona. The center made it tough on the Carson guards to get to the basket and rebound.“Their size hurt us on the boards,” Mendeguia said. “But we were able to hold him to only a few baskets.”Mendeguia said this tournament is good experience for the Senators as they prepare for Sierra League play.“We have been coming out very slow, Mendeguia said. “I think the guys are having a hard time adapting to the competition. We dig ourselves a hole, but then we realize we can compete and (fight back).”DOUGLAS 69, MIRA COSTA 68The Douglas boys basketball team overcame a eight-point first quarter deficit and held on for a 69-68 overtime win over Mira Costa, Calif., in the second round of the Under Armour Holiday Classic in San Diego Thursday morning.Mira Costa appeared to have the game clinched after sinking a late free throw in regulation for a one-point lead, but a lane violation on the shot wiped the point off the scoreboard.Douglas then outscored the Mustangs 11-10 in the extra period to improve to 6-5 overall on the year and 1-1 in the tournament.Hunter Myers led the Tigers with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots. Austin Evans chipped in 10 points, with a 3-pointer, Pat Johnson hit three 3-pointers for nine points, Joe Syammach added eight points, Michael Nolting and Sam Broersma each scored six points, James Herrick had five and Tay Simms wrapped up the scoring with two points.VARSITY GIRLSCARSON DROPS 2 GAMESAfter enduring a seven hour bus trip to arrive to Livermore High School — just outside the Bay Area — on Wednesday, the Carson girls basketball team “underachieved,” according to coach Nate Tolbert. Carson lost 71-39.“It was rough,” Tolbert said. “We had too many turnovers to go with sporadic play. We were never able to get into a groove. We didn’t perform, we didn’t get the job done.”Natalie Salas led the team with 10 points. Savannah Smith scored nine points and Madison Preston chipped in eight points. Making matters worse, the already short-handed Senators lost guard Carly Bachmann to a back injury during the physical game. That left Carson with seven players for its opening round game of the West Coast Jamboree. Short-handed the Senators fell to Rodriguez, a team out of Fairfield, Calif., by 7 points, 43-36.Tolbert said the Senators had their opportunities. Down six points, Tolbert said the Senators had four breakaway layup opportunities and ended up turning the ball over. He credited the Senator defense for keeping the team in the game. “We handed them everything,” Tolbert said, adding that it was a game the Senators should have won. “Turnovers were our nemesis.”Carson also struggled from the free throw line making 5 of 18. “We need to tighten up the little things,” he said.Salas led the team with 13 points. Maddi Saarem added nine points. Smith added five points, while playing the entire game at guard. Carson plays James Logan at 9:30 a.m. today.DOUGLAS GOES 1-1The Douglas girls basketball team opened the Las Vegas Holiday Classic with a win and a loss Thursday.The Lady Tigers raced out to a 14-2 lead over Shadow Ridge in the first game and never looked back, claiming a 40-26 win.Desiree Cage led the Tigers with nine points, Leonna Mortimer added seven, Diana Regalado had six, McKenna Kynett and Corryne Millett each had four, Kelly Sonnemann had three and Mandy Weaver, Kassidy Freitas and Yvette Schlee each scored two points.Later in the day, Douglas fell to Southern Division I powerhouse Liberty High School by the score of 62-21.FRESHMEN GIRLSCarson 55, Damonte 23The Carson freshmen girls basketball team knocked off Damonte, 55-23, on Thursday at the State Farm Holiday Classic.Serena Miller led the team with 17 points. Andrea Maffei chipped in 11 points. Maffei, Bailey Allen and Brianna Alvarado all added eight steals for the Senators. Miller, and Melissa Glanzman both had six steals. Maffei and Alvarado both added six assists. Taylor Weddell led the team with six rebounds.
