PREP/JC: WNC baseball clubs Central Arizona

LAS VEGAS - Behind 5.1 scoreless innings by Matt Robertson and the offense of Dillon Ness and Derrick Pitts, the Western Nevada College baseball team defeated top- ranked Central Arizona 15-4 on Friday.

WNC trailed 4-3 heading into the fifth when it scored one in the fifth, three in the sixth, fourth in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth.

Robertson struck out four and allowed two hits in relief of starter Anthony Consglio. Ness was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Pitts had a 3-run homer, finishing with four RBIs. WNC collected 12 hits.

"Matt made a lot of good pitches," coach D.J. Whittemore said. "He did a good job off pounding the strike zone and keeping them off balance.

"It was an offensive outburst for us. We caught them on an off night."

WNC, ranked 14th, improves to 4-1 on the season. The two teams play a doubleheader today.

"I expect to see a different team (today)," Whittemore said of Central Arizona.

JC SOFTBALL

WNC goes 1-2

YUMA, Ariz, - The Western Nevada College softball team fell short of an upset of No. 1 Yavapai, falling 8-2 Friday.

WNC lost to Yavapai 11-1 last week.

According to coach Leah Wentworth, WNC was down 5-2 going into the seventh inning when Yavapai added insurance runs. Wentworth said Yavapai took advantage of WNC errors to build the 5-2 lead.

Alexia Alley took the loss. Jennifer Quam went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases. Ali-Marie Lostra, Alia Cox and Jordan Thomas all had a hit. Cox had an RBI.

WNC bounced back with a 5-2 win over Golden West. Lostra picked up the win.

Quam was 2-for-4. Taleas Marble was 2-for-3 and Tori Crowell was 2-for-3. Lostra, Thomas and Crowell all had RBIs.

In the final game of the day, WNC fell 8-7 to El Paso.

WNC had a 7-4 lead going in to the sixth inning. Alley took the loss. Quam, Marble and Ashley Gleason all collected hits.

WNC, 5-7, plays two games today.

Douglas drills Manogue

RENO - The gymnasium at Bishop Manogue High School has been somewhat like kryptonite for the Douglas boys' basketball program in recent years.

The Tigers have only played the Miners there three times since the South Reno campus opened in 2004, but each time, Manogue has handed Douglas dizzying defeats.

That changed Friday night.

Douglas, which hadn't allowed less than 79 points to the Miners in the three prior meetings, rode the strength of its full-court pressure defense to a 55-38 win over Manogue on Friday.

The game moved the Tigers to within one win of clinching its first league or division title since 1996-97 and first-ever Sierra League title (the High Desert and Sierra Leagues were established in 2000).

Manogue limited Hunter Myers to 10 points and just two in the second half, but couldn't find an answer for the rest of the Tigers' roster.

Nick Maestretti led the team with 13, Connor Hughes had 12 and Nick VonAhsen finished with 11, giving Douglas four players in double-figures scoring for the first time this season.

Dayton boys top Lions

Dayton improved to 6-3 in league play Friday with a 61-51 win over visiting Yerington.

Senior forward Dylan Taylor led the Dust Devils with 23 points, while sophomore center Bernardo Macias contributed 12.

Dayton hosts Fallon today at 3:30.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Miners handle Tigers

RENO - Douglas came out strong against the league-leading Manogue Miners Friday night, building a 9-5 lead through the first quarter.

However, the Miners came back strong to claim a 70-36 win in the game.

Diana Regalado led the Tigers with 11 points, Cora Moody added six and Ebony Cleveland, Tia Lyons and Erika Munoz each had four in the loss.

JV BASKETBALL

Dayton girls top Yerington

The Dayton girls basketball team bounced back from an early season loss to Yerington with a 46-22 win on Friday.

Leading scorers were Ashley Sandy with 13 points, Muranda Fowler with 11 points and Cheyanne Strong with 10 points.

Dayton, 13-8 and 4-3 in league plays at 11 a.m. today at home against Fallon.

Carson boys lose thriller

RENO - Wooster grabbed a 41-39 win over Carson Friday at Criag Congdon Gym.

Alan Cohen led Carson with 11 points, while Andrew Gutierrez added six.

Peacock leads Carson

RENO - Gina Peacock scored 18 points to lead the Senators to a 58-34 win over Wooster.

Kayla Aikins scored 10, while Natali Salas and Skye Simpson scored nine each. Lauren Jensen scored six.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Carson boys roll

The Carson freshman boys basketball team knocked off Wooster 49-34.

Carson was led by Jimmy Redlark with 16 points. Cameron Price and Kyle Steele each added 10.

Carson freshman girls win

Three players - Maddie Preston, Michelle Perry and Jermijah Thompson - all reached double figures to lead Carson to a 55-19 win.

Preston led the way with 12, Perry tallied 11 and Thompson 10.

Erica Gallegos finished with nine.

Carson is 18-3.
