Senator Square: Talent will be on display Wednesday

The CHS talent show will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson City Community Center. This is sure to be an amazing show.

VOLLEYBALL

FUNDRAISER

There will be a CHS Volleyball Team fundraiser at Mmm Yogurt on Thursday. Throughout the day, 20 percent of all sales with the mention of this fundraiser will be donated to the school. As we celebrate American Heart Month, proceeds from this event will be donated to the American Heart Association.

CHS GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Carson High girls basketball team will be hosting the first round of the playoffs at Carson High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday. This will be the first playoff game for the girls at home in over five years. We would really like to fill the stands and support these ladies.

CHS BOWLERS COMPETE

Good luck to the bowlers this week as they enter the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling program's first round of playoffs. The team has been exceptional this season with six wins and only one loss. The team consists of 12 bowlers. They will bowl 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gold Dust West.  

PROSTART COMPETES

The culinary arts ProStart state competition starts on Tuesday. There are 15 students competing in three different competitions. Management: They have developed a restaurant based on specific demographics and present it with a visual display, oral presentation and a question and answer period. Hot Foods: The teams prepare a three-course meal in one hour, using just two butane burners.

Cake Decorating: They have one hour to decorate a 9-inch round cake using only buttercream icing.

GLOBAL AWARENESS

Invisible Children is an organization that seeks to help child soldiers in Africa.

They will be presenting at Carson High School at 8:10 a.m., 10:05 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. March 1.

One of the presenters will be a man from Africa who was personally involved in the conflict. The Invisible Children team will also be presenting at First United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. March 1. The public is invited to both events.

REAL SCIENCE

FOR STUDENTS

In addition to the normal topics covered in a physics class, Mr. Bean's students got a chance to work as real scientists at CHS. Recently, 54 students had the opportunity to participate in NASA/UC-Berkeley's Space Science Laboratory's GEONS-Project. GEONS stands for Geomagnetic Events Observation Network By Students.

CHS physics students were able to collect sunspot, solar flare and coronal mass ejections data. Students used this data to determine its effects on the Earth's magnetic field, communication satellites and other ground-based electronic systems. Students were also able to predict solar storms.

This research is inspired by the fact that the next solar maximum is to occur late 2012-early 2013. All the students received certificates from the UC-Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory. Later this spring Carson students will again have a chance to work shoulder to shoulder with real scientists exploring the night sky.

All CHS students are welcome to attend the Saturday evening "Star Party" at the WNC Jack C. Davis Observatory. Mr. Bean and staff from the observatory staff will be on hand to help direct telescopes and answer questions.

DEBATE RESULTS

& REQUEST

Congratulations to the debate team for having a successful tournament last weekend at Fernley High School. Rebecca Matley and Sean Lopez placed first and third in novice impromptu taking two of the top spots in the event and securing Carson High second place overall in the Northern Nevada Forensic League in impromptu speaking.

Congratulations to Katharyn Woods for placing second in Humorous for her interpretation of "Mean Girls." Katharyn has qualified for the final round both of the last two tournaments.

In addition to tournament competition Carson High debaters are making gains in other speaking competitions as well. Sean Lopez won the club level competition of the Lions Speaking Contest on Feb. 6.

Carson High School will be hosting the next Speech and Debate tournament March 2-3.

We need community judges to hold this important event.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week's senior spotlight is on Natalie Trejo. Natalie has a weighted grade-point average of 4.31.

Natalie is an extremely talented gymnast and has devoted years of her life to the sport. She spends a minimum of 20 hours a week training at Deltchez Gymnastics in Reno. Natalie has competed in four national Junior Olympics competitions and in 2009 and 2011 was the national champion in the floor exercises.

She has won numerous regional and local competitions. Natalie has signed her National Letter of Intent with Southern Utah University where she will be receiving a full scholarship.

We are very proud of Natalie's accomplishments at Carson High School and are pleased that she is able to represent us so successfully through her gymnastics. We look forward to what she will do in the future.

STAFF FACT

Answer to last week's fact is Shane Quilling. Shane was a member of the 1984 MSU-Bozeman Division I-AA National Championship football team. Shane teaches weights, health and P.E. at CHS.

New fact: This person graduated from Carson High and the University of Nevada.

She held the title of Miss Carson City 1977 and was third runner up in the Miss Nevada Pageant 1978. She is a second-generation Nevadan, her daughter third-generation and her grandson, born last year, is a fourth- generation Nevadan.

She was the Carson High Cheer Coach for 13 years.
