ROUNDUP: Carson wrestlers third at Fernley

FERNLEY - Carson High's wrestling team finished third at the Vaquero Invitational on Saturday.

Lowry won the event with 323 points, followed by Spanish Springs at 258.5, Carson at 220 and Reed at 148.

Kyle Sharp (106) and Cole McCarthy (126) were the only champions. It was McCarthy's second consecutive tournament win, and he was also named the top lightweight wrestler for the second time this year.

"I actually hoped we'd do better," said Carson coach Tim McCarthy. "It was definitely not our best tournament. The good thing is that we have three weeks left to get ready for regionals. Even the guys who placed high need to get better and clean up some things."

Both Sharp and McCarthy were 5-0. Sharp won 5-2 in the finals, and racked up four straight wins by fall to get to the final match. McCarthy won all of his matches by fall.

Jordan Luhrs (152) was second with a 4-1 record. He lost 6-3 in the finals. Nico Garcia (182) also placed second with a 4-1 record. He lost to his Lowry opponent 3-2 in the championship match.

Nicholas Lani (132) was third with a 5-1 record, while Adan Ortega (120) was fourth with a 4-2 record, including three pins. Cooke (220) also compiled a 4-2 record. Javier Torres (195) was fifth with a 4-2 record, while Austin Brown (138) and Jordan Woodward (heavyweight) were 3-3 and each placed sixth.

Carson returns to action Wednesday night at 6 with a dual match at Damonte Ranch.

BOYS' BASKETBALL

Douglas subdues Wooster

MINDEN - The Douglas boys' basketball team coasted to a 79-37 win at home over Wooster Saturday night despite playing with a depleted bench.

The Tigers were without a number of players due to injury or illness, but pieced together a solid team win with just nine players available.

"We did a good job defensively, especially over the final three quarters," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "They came at us pretty good in the first quarter but the kids figured it out and clamped down."

Douglas took a 20-17 lead out of the first and limited the Colts to just 20 more points in the game. On the other end of the court, Trevor Shaffer poured in 21 points and Hunter Myers added 20 to lead the Tiger attack.

The Tigers went an impressive 13-for-13 from the free throw line with Myers going 6-for-6, Shaffer going 3-for-3 and Jake Tessmann and Michael Nolting each going 2-for-2.

Point guard Connor Hughes ran the offense with efficiency and picked apart Wooster's 2-3 zone.

"Trevor just had a great game," Thacker said. "He dominated inside and did really well finishing. The kids had a lot of patience attacking their zone as a team. They dissected it, it was good to see."

Douglas opened up a big lead, outscoring the Colts 16-2 in the second quarter and didn't look back from there.

The Tigers next travel to Damonte Ranch on Monday night in a matchup between the Sierra League's No. 1 and No. 2 teams. Tuesday brings Spanish Springs to town.

"Damonte, I can't say it enough, they are pretty good," Thacker said. "I really like their squad and I like what they do. Spanish Springs is one of the best teams in the Northern 4A. They're really good, they just aren't getting the wins right now.

"Eventually they're going to get it figured out and it'll be scary when they do. They're a team that can beat anyone any time."

Dayton falls in double overtime

LOVELOCK - Dayton lost its eighth consecutive game in the month of January, falling 68-66 in double overtime to 2A Lovelock.

Dayton dropped to 2-3 in pod play entering Tuesday afternoon's game against ROP.

Dylan Taylor led the Dust Devils, 7-11 overall, with 29 points, while Adan Gomez tallied 16 and Cody Yeater 10.

Carson falls to Damonte

Damonte Ranch knocked off Carson 60-45 Saturday at Morse Burley Gym. Alan Cohen led the Senators with 16, while Chace Baker added 10.

FRESHMAN BOYS' BASKETBALL

Carson routed by Mustangs

RENO - Carson failed to put a scorer in double figures in a 62-42 loss to Damonte Ranch on Saturday.

Julian Alvarado led Carson with eight and Brett Paulson added seven.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Lovelock rips Dayton

LOVELOCK - The Dust Devils trailed by 33 at the half en route to a 66-26 loss to Lovelock. It was Dayton's first loss in pod play after chalking up three straight victories.

Taylor Hill led Dayton with nine points, while Cora Mebius, Taylor Ingersoll and Lettie Lynch added four each.

"The girls were a little gassed after playing a tough game last night (Friday)," DHS coach Cliff Serawop said. "They weren't into it mentally. Lovelock is a tough team. We may have been psyched out."

JV GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Carson rolls Damonte

Natali Salas scored 12 points to lead Carson (15-3) to a 55-41 victory over Damonte Ranch Saturday at Morse Burley Gym.

Gina Peacock added nine, while Skye Simpson, Kayla Aikins and Haley Ridley all had seven points.

FRESHMAN GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Carson overpowers DRHS

RENO - Michelle Perry tallied 12 points to lead Carson to a 44-20 victory on Saturday.

Maddie Preston and Teresa Boehmer added eight points each. Also playing well were Arlette Marical and Erica Gallegoes.

Carson improved to 13-3.
