COMMUNITY: McGahuey, Purcell named all-state

Christa McGahuey and Jennifer Purcell have been named to the Las Vegas Review- Journal's 4A all-state team.

McGahuey, who is headed to University of Detroit-Mercy on a softball scholarship, hit .388 with 10 homers, 25 runs scored and 34 RBI. She pitched and played first for the Senators.

Purcell, an outfielder, hit .430 with six homers and 37 RBI. Purcell, a junior, will be expected to carry the load offensively for Carson next year.

Soccer camp slated at Edmonds complex

The University of Nevada soccer coaching staff is holding a two-day camp June 12-13 at the Edmonds Sports Complex.

The camp is open to boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 16. The cost is $70 for both day or $45 for one day.

Dr. Melissa Price, Nevada's head coach, said the camp will focus on individual skill development as well as attacking and defending principles in small groups and small-sided games.

Tennis camp at Centennial Park

Carson High tennis coach Diane Baker Roberts is holding tennis camps in June and July for kids between the ages of 4 and 14.

The first camp is June 11-14. Ages 4-6 ($8 per day, $30 for the week) go from 8:30 to 9 a.m., ages 7-10 ($15 per d ay, $55 for the week) are from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and ages 11-14 go from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The other clinics are June 18-21, June 25-28, July 9-12, July 16-19 and July 23-26.

Tennis shoes and tennis rackets are required.

Jackson wins AltaAlpina bicycle race

Garth Jackson won the A Division AltaAlpina race by approximately two minutes over Robert Braun. Jackson was clocked in 41:32, while Braun was clocked in 43:02.

Michael Bayer won the B race in 45:58 and William Harding was second in 48:24. Josh Merkow was first in the C race in 48:35 and Jennie Hamiter was second in 51:03. Charles Brickley won the D race in 56.45 and Alisha Ashbaugh was second in 64:06. Erik Jacobs won the D race in 55:56.

Benefit BMX race set for June 10

A BMX race to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is scheduled for June 10 at 9 a.m. at Edmonds Sports Complex.

The cost is $10 and you need a bicycle (chain guard, kickstand, reflectors and pegs removed), helmet, long sleeve shirt, long pants and tennis shoes. Gloves are recommended.

Riders under 18 need to be signed in by an adult. Riders don't need to have a BMX membership for this race.

Archers, Sullivans win at Thunder Canyon

Steve and Kathy Archer and Leland and Karon Sullivan teamed up to shot 116 at Thunder Canyon's Memorial Day Shamble (2 balls of 4) event.

Bob and Monica Pike and Glen and Jackie Cheney were second with a 118, while Jonathan and Saul Singer and Jack and Virginia Bonar were third a 120.

• Also at Thunder Canyon, Larry Goodnight, Carl Baker, Charlie Cockerill and Dave Nielsen combined to shoot 140 to win the Progressive Best Ball event.

Steve Archer, Butch Cattanach, Randy Plymell and Dave Westfall were second at 145, while Dave Mello, Bryan Sample, Saul Singer and Ray Badger were third at 146.

Masiello, Paul team up for victory at Empire

John Masiello and Nick Paul combined for a net 62 to win the A Flight at the Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club scotch doubles event.

Joe Scott and Steven Ballard tied for second with Fred Olesek and Dick Montoya with 63s.

Don Burge and John Sullivan shot a net 59 to win the B flight by two shots over Norm Scoggin and David Aalbers.

Schreiber triumphs at Carson Valley GC

Jeff Schreiber shot a net 68 to win the first round of the CVGC President's Cup.

Ken Smitreski was second with a 70, while Joe Morrison was third with a 71. Daryle Lewis and John Dorman tied for fourth with 73s.

Kapczynski, Cloutier win at Silver Oak

William Kapczynski and Jeff Cloutier were flight winners in last weekend's individual stroke play event at Silver Oak.

Kapczynski won Flight 1 with a net 71, a stroke better than Paul Jorgensen and two shots better than Bill Prowse, Dennis Meisenheimer and Kevin Johnson.

Cloutier won Flight 2 with a 70, a stroke better than Bruce Brisson and Jim Flemming and two strokes better than Greg Wilkin.

Foursome combines for Stableford win

Roland Keith Owing, Ron Tamori, Buzz Wagner and Gary Thomas Helseth combined for a net 98 to win the Silver oak Senior Men's 4-man Stableford tourney.

Jim Pursel, Dennis Puccinelli, Doug Mcgilvray and Pat Lantis were two points behind at 96 along with Michael Gard, Tom Keating, Wilbur Keating and Al Moss. Luther Best, Lee Gilmore, Tom Rackerby and Mel Younker were next at 94.
