School officials are asking for the public's help in catching a group of taggers who vandalized Seeliger Elementary School - and in preventing future such defacements.
Seeliger's lead custodian, Rick Parmenter, arrived for work Friday morning and found graffiti on the walls of the portable buildings, across the ball wall and on the fence around the solar arrays. He said it would take an entire day of work to clean it up.
Mark Korinek, director of operations for the Carson City School District, said he is worried that the tagging occurred just a week into summer vacation. He hopes residents will help patrol the schools.
"There were a bunch of kids there last night hanging out, we've heard," he said. "I assume a bunch of people saw what was going on and didn't do anything about it. I'm concerned we're not being vigilant as a community."
He is also concerned that a trend may develop.
"I want the facilities to be available for people to use, not abuse," he said. "We'd hate to have to lock up our facilities because they're being abused."
Anyone with information about the damage to Seeliger is asked to call Korinek at 775-283-2181.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office warned witnesses not to confront taggers, but to call 911. Anyone who sees graffiti may call the Sheriff's Office at 775-887-2012.
