ELK GROVE, Calif, - It's surprising that a team would come out flat after three straight wins, but that's what happened to Carson High's softball team on Saturday
After winning its pool with a 3-0 record, Carson lost to Pleasant Grove 2-1 and St. Francis 8-0 Saturday on the final day of the Victory Preseason TOC.
"We were flat coming in," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "I wanted us to be able to finish like we started."
Christa McGahuey worked the Pleasant Grove game and allowed just four hits in picking up the loss. She fanned four and walked one. She allowed a run in the third and one in the sixth.
Carson's only score came in the bottom of the sixth when Jennifer Purcell hit a solo homer.
The Senators managed five hits, one each by Purcell, Elisse McGowan. Emily Collins, Dee Morrow and McGahuey.
In the second game, neither McGahuey or Lou Ashbaugh were effective. They allowed 12 hits, two strikeouts and three walks.
Carson managed just two hits, one each by Morrow and Erica Watson.
Dayton splits
YERINGTON - Dayton beat Battle Mountain 7-6 and lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Fernley on the second day of the Yerington Tournament.
Makayla Shadle fanned 12 and pitched a no-hitter against Fernley. The game's only run scored in the fourth on a wild pitch.
In the win over Battle Mountain, Kelly Combs was the winning pitcher. Cheyanna Burrows led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, and Kalee Alexander also went 3-for-3. Kiana Gonsalves went 2-for-3.
TRACK
Thurman enjoys big day
Carson opened its track season with a meet against Reno, Spanish Springs and Bishop Manogue on Saturday.
Reno won the boys meet with 109 points, Carson was second at 61, Spanish Springs third at 57 and Manogue fourth at 44. Reno won the girls meet with 97 points. Carson was second at 90 followed by Spanish Springs with 57 and Manogue with 35.
Elena Thurman led the Carson girls with wins in the 100 meters (13.10) and the triple jump (34-feet 5 1/2 inches). Coach Robert Maw said the triple jump was a PR.
"I'm surprised she did it, because we really burned her legs this week," Maw said.
Carson won the 3200 relay, the 1600 relay and the 800 relay.
Kayla Aikins (high jump, 5-6), Maddi Saarem (pole vault, 8-0), Josilyn Daggs (100, 13.40), Alex Drozdoff (3200, 12:37.50). Courtney Hack (shot, 29-9) and Erika Valenzuela (discus, 87-4). Ali Fleming was third in the shot put (29-8 1/4).
On the boys side, Taylor Bradshaw turned in the lone individual win with a 2:05.00 effort in the 800. Carson also won the 800 and 1600 relay races.
Clint Page was second in the 200 (24.30), Nathan Hazard was second in the shot put (42-2), Corey Reid was was second in the high jump (5-8) and Cameron Price was second in the triple jump (39-6 1/2). Hazard was third in the discus at 128-8, while Stefan Sobkiewicz was third in the long jump at 18-2. Andrew Cowan was third in the 400 with a 54.90.
Carson returns to action next Saturday at Wooster.
Dayton fares well at Silver Stage
SILVER SPRINGS - Dayton participated in the eight-team event. Official times were unavailable at press time.
Lettie Lynch won the 100 and 200, and she also anchored the winning 800 relay team. Alyse Fletcher, Rybecca Fletcher and Ashley Vickers were other members of that quartet. Katrina Breithaupt was first in the 1600, second in the 800 and ran on the 3200 relay squad which placed second. Mallorie Gribble, Sara Torgerson and Mariah Mena also ran the 3200 relay.
Josh Koch won the shot with a throw of 42-9. The 3200 relay team was first thanks to the efforts of Aaron Elissa, Jaden Lynch, Skyler Rose, and Ethan Galloway. Tylor Bard was first in the high jump at 6-feet.
JV SOFTBALL
Carson loses thriller
Kaitlyn Jimmy threw a complete game in 4-3 loss to Fallon on Saturday.
Kandis Tuttle and Jimmy had two hits, while Lacey Peternell, Aubrey Northrup, Malia Tiffer and Cameron Sievers had one hit each. Peternell had two RBI.
Carson beat McQueen 11-3 as Jimmy threw a complete game.
The Senators finished with a 10-0 loss to Spanish Springs. Tuttle and Jimmy hit safely.
