PREP ROUNDUP: Sloppy defense costs Carson girls dearly

RENO - Galena High snapped Carson's three-game win streak with a 7-6 win Tuesday afternoon in a Northern 4A game.

Carson outhit Galena, but made nine errors in the game, including five combined miscues in the first and second innings which led to six runs and a quick 6-0 lead for the Grizzlies.

Carson stormed back to tie the game with five in the third and one in the top of the fourth.

In the third, Emily Collins singled and scored on a two-run homer by Christa McGahuey. After singles by Jen Purcell and Ellise McGowan, who finished with three hits, Danielle Morrow hammered a three-run homer to make it 6-5. In the fourth, Collins singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on McGowan's double.

Galena scored the game-winner in the bottom of the inning on a single, an error, a walk and infield out.

Carson, 18-10 overall, hosts Damonte today at 3:45.

Dust Devils sweep

Silver Stage

SILVER SPRINGS - Dayton High swept a doubleheader from Silver Stage, 15-10 and 11-0 on Tuesday in a Lahontan League game.

In the 11-0 win, Makayla Shadle fanned 10 and pitched a 2-hitter. Andrea Ramirez, Kiana Gonsalves and Taryn Moore all drove in two runs for the winners, who meet Fernley on Friday.

In the 15-10 win, Dayton scored six in the third and six in the fourth to take control of the game.

Shadle, who pitched the final four innings in relief, went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Gonsalves, Kelly Comb and Kalee Alexander all drove in two runs.

Douglas loses 5-4

in 9-inning thriller

RENO - Bishop Manogue scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 4-3 deficit and beat the Tigers.

The game was tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.

Illiana Brown gave Douglas a 3-2 lead in the second with a two-run single. Manogue tied it in the fourth at 3, and the teams remained deadlocked until the ninth.

Kalee Duryee's sacrifice fly gave Douglas a 4-3 lead, but that didn't last long, as Manogue strung together three two-out hits off Duryee to win the game.

Douglas is 10-19 overall and 7-11 in league.

BASEBALL

Douglas loses thriller

MINDEN - A solid effort on the mound wasn't enough as the Douglas baseball team fell 3-1 to North Valleys in Minden Tuesday afternoon.

The Tigers, who entered the game with a one-game lead over Spanish Springs for the eighth and final playoff spot, mustered three hits in the loss.

Junior Nolan Weintz struck out six and walked just one while scattering eight hits and allowing three runs in the loss.

"Nolan gave us every chance to win," Douglas coach Bruce Jacobsen said. "It came back to, again, us not taking advantage of the opportunities and not getting the timely hits.

"This has been plaguing us for a while now and we need to get out of this funk on offense. We're getting great efforts on the mound, and if our bats wake up, we'll be in good shape."

Douglas twice left the bases loaded in the game.

It started in the first inning for Douglas as Dusty Fisher reached safely on a bunt and moved to second on an error. A fielder's choice moved him to third and, after Cody Begovich was hit by a pitch, Fisher scored on a single from Nolan Weintz.

Sullivan Cauley drew a two-out walk to load the bases but the threat ended with a sharp ground ball up the middle that the North Valleys' pitcher, Chris Fleck, just managed to get his glove on.

The 1-0 lead held through the second inning but North Valleys strung a couple of hits together in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.

Fleck retired 11 of Douglas' next 12 batters before Fisher reached on his second infield hit of the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. He stole second, but got stranded there.

North Valleys brought an insurance run across in the top of the sixth, but Douglas put together a potential rally in the bottom half.

Weintz drew a one-out walk and Matt Santos was hit by a pitch with two outs. Jimmy King drew a walk on four pitches to load the bases, but the runners were stranded on an inning-ending strikeout.

Douglas went down in order in the bottom half to close out the game.

Dayton blanks Silver

Stage twice

SILVER SPRINGS - Dayton High cruised to two baseball wins over Silver Springs Tuesday afternoon.

Dayton won the opener 20-0 behind the 2-hit effort of Peyton Morena, who went five innings and struck out six. Elliott King went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Cole Hummel went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.

In the econd game, Dayton won 14-0. Michael Dieneman allowd one hit and fanned two in two innings of work.

Dayton improved to 9-4, one game ahead of Fernley. The 3A rivals clash on Friday at Dayton with the winner going to the playoffs. Each team has won one game with the rubber game set to come.

TRACK

Carson JV teams

take second place

Carson High's track teams finished second at the JV Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.

Damonte Ranch boys outpointed Carson 81.5-53.5, while the Damonte girls outscored Carson 94-46.

Cameron Price won four events - the high jump (5-6), long jump (19-8 1/2), triple jump (40-5 1/2) and 400 (54.78). John Artz won the 3200 in 11:49.70. The boys won the 3200 relay.

On the girls side, Theresa Boehmer won the shot (32-0) and discus (89-2), and Savannah Smith took the long jump (14-7 1/2) and the triple jump (31-4). Melicia Martinez won the 100 in 14.00 and was third in the 200 (28.35), Chelsea Gordon won the 1600 in 6:13.41.

GOLF

Carson finishes second

Carson High's golf team shot a 425 en route to a second-place finish at the last Sierra League Invitational of the season.

Roman Smokey led the way with a 7-over-par 79 at Eagle Valley-West. Nate Brown had an 82 and Austin Pacheco shot 84. Danny Manning and Dalton Butler rounded out the scoring with 90s.

The Senators team qualified for the upcoming regionals which start Monday at noon at Dayton Valley Golf Club. The 36-hole tournament ends Tuesday.

"Hopefully we're peaking at the right time," said coach Jeff Rispin. "Roman is coming along and Nate played very well today. I think we have a chance to make state."
