4A track regionals set for today at Damonte

The 2012 track post-season starts today with the 4A regional trials at Damonte Ranch.

Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. with running events slated for 10 a.m. The 3200 and 3200 relay events are finals only, while the top 12 in the 800 and 1600 advance to the regional finals set for May 12, also at Damonte Ranch.

The top three finishers in each event qualify for state on May 18-19. This year's state meet is at Damonte Ranch.

Here is a rundown on the Carson athletes with the best shot at advancing to the regional finals in individual events based on the performance sheets turned in to the NIAA:

Boys 200: Reed's Josh Gingras is the leader at 21.89, but Carson's Clint Page is coming off two wins at Reed and is 11th best at 23.38.

Boys 400: Mc Queen's Arnold Carrillo comes in at 47.43, and he's the only Northern Nevadan with a seeded time of less than 50 seconds. Carson's best bet is Taylor Bradshaw, who has the third-fastest time at 50.74.

Boys 1600: Reno's Jordan Cardenas has the fastest time coming in at 4:24.94. Carson's Daniel Jauregui is 11th-fastest at 4:54.40.

Boys 3200: Bishop Manogue's Donald Bernard has the fastest seeded time of 9:30.12. Carson's Daniel Jauregui is ranked 11th at 10:46.18 and Porfirio Jauregui is ranked 13th at 10:54.33.

110-300 hurdles: McQueen's Cody Sharp (14.94) and Reno's Nicholas Norton (39.21) have turned in the fastest times in their events. Carson's Dakota Baker is the eight-best official time in the 110 at 16:27, and he is ranked sixth in the 300 at 42.85. Chance Quilling, who just started running the 300s, is ranked fourth at 41.94.

Triple jump: Quilling, in his first season of track, enters the meet with the third-best mark (43-3).

High jump: Freshman Cory Reid of Carson is ranked No. 1 at 6-2 with Baker in the No. 3 spot at 6 feet.

Shot put/discus: McQueen's Shane Wickes has the best marks in both events (50-6 1/2 and 154-5). Carson's Nate Hazard has the second-best mark in the discus at 146-8 and is 11th in the shot at 45-5 3/4.

Girls 100: Reed's Adriana Newell has run a 12.05. Carson's Elena Thurman has a best of 13.14.

Girls 400: Newell has run a 56.61. Carson's Sahara Winder will come in with a seeded time of 61.24 and Kaitlyn Holmes has a 63.03.

Girls 800: McQueen's Haley Harris has run a 2:18.40. Carson's Rebecca Matley is eighth-fastest at 2:28.72.

Girls 1600: Reno's Erika Root has a 5:06.47, and is a clear favorite. Carson's Alex Drozdoff and Erika Sosa have run 5:35.00 and 5:41.65, respectively.

Girls 3200: Douglas freshman Lindsey Adams has a 11:35.49. Drozdoff has a 12:08.88 and Sosa has a 12:21.14.

Long jump/triple jump: McQueen's Katy Hufford has an 18-6 to her credit. Carson freshman Maddi Preston is seventh-best at 16-2. Hiug's Shaina Carthen leads the way in the triple jump at 38-3 1/2. Thurman has a 34-5 1/2, while Preston has a best of 33-3.

High jump: Reed's Gabby Williams has gone 6 feet and should win it. Carson's duo of Preston and Kayla Aikins both have gone 4-10.

Girls Shot put/discus: McQueen's Karyna Armstrong leads both events at 40-1 1/2 and 124-2, respectively. Tiana McAllister-Daggs is third in he shot at 34-6 1/2 and ninth in the discus at 96-2. Makayla Ragnone (32-8), Ali Fleming (32-1) and Courtney Hack (31-4 1/4) are all in the top seven in terms of shot put marks. Fleming and Erika Valenzuela have both thrown over 101 feet in the discus.

Girls pole vault: This shapes up as a battle between Manogue's Madison Mills and Douglas' Amanda Brazeau, who come in with qualifying bests of 12-10 and 12-feet, respectively. Wooster's Alexis Romero also has cleared 12 feet. Carson's Maddi Saarem is listed fifth at 10-7.
