The election is over, and thoughts turn to gratitude and remembrance: for the nation’s veterans and for the opportunity to share our blessings with family and friends. In honor of both holidays, the library will be closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day as well as Nov. 22 and 23 in celebration of Thanksgiving.With book selections that are always interesting and often eclectic, the Bookmasters have chosen Keri Hulme’s 1984 Booker Prize-winning novel, “The Bone People” as November’s pick. Set in New Zealand and focusing on the relationship between the Maori and European cultures, the novel’s core theme concerns three people who attempt to discover what love is and how to find it. The Bookmasters meet only once this month, at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium.BRIC offers social media classesSocial media has forever changed the way businesses operate and market themselves. The BRIC is offering several classes geared toward assisting new and established businesses, helping them take advantage of new and exciting advertising venues. The first class, “Facebook for Business,” will show attendees the fundamentals of creating a Facebook page for businesses. The workshop meets from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the BRIC (108 E Proctor St.).• Highway 101: “Social Media 101,” meets from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the BRIC and demonstrates the basics of social media and how it applies to business.• How to Create a Website Using Free Online Tools meet from noon until 1:30 on Thursday and will give participants a chance to use Google Sites to create a simple website. Only 42 percent of small businesses take advantage of a website, and since more and more folks access the Internet, this class could prove invaluable, Space is limited because most attendees will be using BRIC laptops to create their site. Explore the World@ Your LibraryMany Carson-area residents have friends and family in or from Mexico. Thursday’s “Explore the World” focuses on our neighbor/country to the south. Victoria White will be the guest speaker for this month’s program, which begins at 6 p.m. on the 15th in the auditorium. Ongoing EventsVamos a Platicar (Let’s Talk) meets from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium. Practicing conversation in another language is one of the most beneficial ways to become more fluent. The atmosphere is relaxing and non-threatening and the people are friendly.Teen Advisory Board members will conduct their monthly meeting from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. Middle and high school students are encouraged to join this active group, which is providing community service, innovative ideas, and volunteer hours to the library. The pizza and drinks that are provided make for an enjoyable afternoon.Love on a Leash, the popular program pairing young readers with trained therapy dogs meets from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Children’s Room.Family Story continues at its regular time (10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.) on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The group will not meet on Nov. 22 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
