Senator Square: Eliminate library fines and help a good cause

Congratulations to my fellow co-workers who have been voted on by the staff at Carson High School as Teachers of the Month. Sherri Kelley, Computer Lit, Web Design, and Flash Instructor was named for August. Cort Roseleip, biology and environmental science teacher was given the honors for September. October’s honor went to chemistry and honors chemistry teacher David Mital. Congratulations to these very deserving teachers and thanks for all you do for CHS.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTThanksgiving is a time to give thanks for what you have and to also help others. Nov. 21 is Give a Scarf to Get a Scarf at Carson High. On the day before Thanksgiving break, we are asking students to wear a scarf and donate a gently used or new scarf to our local F.I.S.H program. Carson High School also welcomes two new clubs. The first is a positive body image club that will meet once a week that will encourage high school students to develop a more positive image of themselves. Ms. Fleming and one of her students will run the club. The second club-sport that was approved was a coed lacrosse team. As part of Jake Trapp’s senior project, he formed the club in hopes to compete with other Northern Nevada schools. This is not a Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association sanctioned team. Want to eliminate that overdue fine and do something good at the same time? The CHS Library is currently hosting a canned food drive, and your fines can be reduced if you donate something to the cause. Every item donated will reduce your fine by $2. REPORTThe following report was submitted by art teacher Mike Malley. I am quite delighted by the refreshing energy of our new Art Department at Carson High School. Teresa Breeden despite all her work with the technology/drafting programs, still manages to instruct Art Foundations her second year in our visual arts department. One of the highlights of taking Ms. Breeden’s class would have to be the large portraits she has them create. This year we will be getting a new kiln, and along with it we have an experienced potter and teacher, John Martin joining our staff. We are grateful to have Mr. Martin. He also teaches Art Foundations and is re-known for his skateboard design project. The future looks extremely promising; we keep drawing more hard working and intelligent students to our department here at CHS. The Advanced Placement Studio class is extremely popular as well as the art shows we held at The Brewery Arts where we competed against Ms. Borselli’s class from Douglas High School. This year we are looking for a location in town for a spring art show. The PTA Reflections contest and the Lucerne art contest are our primary competitions at this time. TEACHER WINSMONEY FOR CLASSMaryanne Weaver, math and American Sign Language Teacher at CHS, recently entered a contest on Facebook with the Dolan Automotive Group. Mrs. Weaver entered the contest hoping to win enough “likes” on the FB contest page so that she might win the cash prize and be able to purchase two more class sets of the textbook needed for her American Sign Language Classes. She won! And the Dolan Automotive group presented her and her students with a check for $2,500 at school this past week. Congrats Mrs. Weaver!SKI TEAM FUNDRAISERSupport the Carson High Ski Team: The team will host its annual fundraiser on Dec. 7 at the community center with the latest Warren Miller Movie. STUDENTS COLLECT FOODStudents at CHS collected food this past week to donate to the Empire Elementary Thanksgiving food drive where more than 100 meals will be distributed to families from that area. More than 40 meals worth of food was collected by CHS students and delivered to the Empire schools. Many teachers encouraged students to participate in giving back and the call was answered. Always so proud of CHS students!SENIOR SPOTLIGHTThis week’s senior spotlight is on Mathew Boggs. Mat has a weighted GPA of 4.26 and is continuing his rigorous academic schedule by taking a full load of classes including three AP classes and one honors class during his senior year. He has been on the varsity tennis team at CHS for four years, works with the robotics club, and is a member of National Honor Society. In addition he has attained the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout. Mat is considering a career in film and will be applying to USC, Northwestern, Willamette College, the University of Colorado, and UNR. CHS is proud of the contribution Mat has made to the class of 2013.• Angila Golik is a government and sociology teacher at CHS and also a member of Senator Pride.
