Historic Grosh letters published in book, commemorated Saturday

Historic letters by Ethan and Hosea Grosh, which chronicle mid-19th Century life in what became the Comstock, were published in a new book that will be recognized Saturday.

The Nevada Historical Society plans to commemorate the historic publication from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the society, 1650 N. Virginia St., in Reno.

At 2 p.m., Ronald M. James and Robert E. Stewart, editors of "The Gold Rush Letters of E. Allen Grosh and Hosea B. Grosh," will combine for a talk about their project. James is state historic preservation officer, Stewart a Nevada historian.

The Grosh letters cover the victories and heartbreaks of the two men, who came from Philadelphia in 1849 even before there was such a thing as the Comstock Lode.

Guests are welcome and there will be guided tours of the society by docents; refreshments will be provided until 4 p.m.

The event coincides with Nevada Heritage month, according to the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Division of Museums and History.
