Deputy injured in motorcycle crash

A Carson City sheriff’s deputy took a downhill turn on a mountain road a little too fast and crashed into a guardrail Thursday afternoon.Deputy Thomas McDonald was taken by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center, although his injuries are believed to be limited to lacerations on his arms and his right leg, said Chief Deputy Ray Saylo.The full extent of his injuries were unknown Thursday night.“He came down a little too fast, laid down and hit the guardrail,” Saylo said. The motorcycle slid another 30 feet downhill.McDonald, along with a group of other officers, was on a training run. McDonald was at the back of the pack. As soon they heard the crash on Lake Tahoe Golf Course Drive, about 200 feet from the intersection with Old Clear Creek Road, they doubled back, officers said.“It sounded like a motorcycle crash,” Sgt. Mike Cullen said.The sound of the crash is unmistakable, Saylo said. “Once you hear it hit the pavement, you know that sound,” he said.The bike itself fared well with very minor damage.“The crash bars did their job,” Cullen said.Saylo said McDonald is an experienced rider with 25 years of experience.
