The Carson Tahoe Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals will host its inaugural Steppin' Out with your Pet Kitty Show from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Carson Mall.

Cats will compete to win title of fattest cat, softest coat, longest tail, shyest cat, loudest voice, cat with the most toes and more. The event, with a theme of "everything cats," will offer raffle prizes, pet safety information, cat-themed items for sale, face paintings and informative items on spaying and neutering. Mayor Bob Crowell will be one of the judges.

The show will spread awareness and draw attention to the condition of deserted animals in the community, said Renee Oshinski, a board member of the Carson Tahoe SPCA . There are more than 9,000 feral cats in Carson City alone.

"Because of foreclosures, people abandon their pets," Oshinski said. "It's sad to see animals once cared for abandoned because life situations throw a curve ball."

To participate in the cat show, fill out a registration form at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital by Sept. 15. Space is limited. Participants should bring crates and carriers and must provide current shot records. Cats must be older than 8 months and must be spayed or neutered. Cost to participate is $15 and includes three categories, each additional category is $5.
