The Carson City Fire Department will be giving away emergency preparedness kits and offering one-on-one help and tutorials from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Home Depot, 3185 Market St.“Carson City wants to help families build an emergency kit and develop a plan,” Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said.“The majority of the time, emergency responders can do just that: respond,” Giomi said. “But when a community-wide disaster rips through Carson City, and emergency responders go from doing their normal jobs to operating in a severe emergency situation, everyone needs to be prepared.”Floods, fires and earthquakes are just some of the emergencies that tie up emergency responders. When that happens, prepared individuals can weather the storms. When responders are “taxed beyond the available resources,” that’s when a kit comes into play.“Carson City wants people to ‘get an emergency kit, make a communications plan, be informed about the different types of emergencies and their appropriate responses, and get involved,’” Giomi said. The event comes during National Preparedness Month, in which individuals are encouraged to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, be informed about different kinds of emergencies and to take the necessary steps to get trained and become engaged in community preparedness and response efforts.
