Carson girls top Tigers, 4-1

MINDEN — It was a tale of two markedly different halves Saturday afternoon.The Douglas girls soccer team dominated the first half and the Carson completely turned the tables with a dominating second half.In the end, the Senators were able to get more goals out of their outstanding period, walking away with a 4-1 comeback win.“Anytime you can come down here and get a win, and play like we did especially in the second half, it’s big,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “Once we got the first half out of the way, the girls settled down and came out ready to go.”Douglas opened the game simply peppering the Senator net, racking up 13 first-half shots.Due in large part to Carson’s standout keeper, Emmy Heller, the barrage of shots produced only one Tiger goal, an arc from LexieWeaver in the 8th minute.“Heller is a great goalkeeper,” Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. “She is hard to score on normally, and it was no different today.”Douglas went into halftime with a 13-8 advantage in shots, having largely controlled the midfield for the majority of the first half.It wasn’t long after the start of the second that Carson got right back into it.Michelle Sandage took an entry pass from the left, dribbled once and squirted a shot through Douglas keeper Corryne Millett’s arms less than a minute into the second.Carson went up 2-1 on a goal from Jaime Perez in the 65th minute and didn’t look back. Perez added another goal on a cross from Sandage in the 72nd minute and Mayra Olivares added a goal in injury time on a nice shot to the high right corner.Defensively, the Senator back line kept the Tiger attack under wraps, not allowing any solid scoring opportunities in the second half.“We just talked about getting back to our basics and our game plan and not stepping away from it,” Lehman said. “The defense got organized and got talking better in the second half. In transition, their communication was better and quicker.”It was exactly what went missing for Douglas down the stretch.“We just lost track of the details,” Fitzhugh said. “We didn’t win the races or the battles in the second half. Things like positioning for the ball. We got too quiet in terms of communication. We came in strong, but it just didn’t work out today.“Carson is a great team, they’re together. We’ll see what this does for us. We have to work it out and move on to the next game. We showed in the first half what we are capable of. We just need to extend that through a complete game.”
