CAC film series concludes tonight with ‘Barbarella’

The Churchill Arts Council’s film series, “Strange Women: Sci-Fi Classics” will conclude tonight with a screening of the 1968 film “Barbarella.”

Tickets are $7 for CAC members and $10 for non-members and may be purchased in the Art Center’s bar beginning at 6 p.m. The film will start at 7 p.m.

The film is set in the far, far distant future and is based on a classic French “adult” comic strip and has been called an excellent example of the space spoof. It was the first time a comic science fiction hero was adapted into a feature film as opposed to serials such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers.

In the 41st century Barbarella sets off for the city of Sogo on the planet Lythion where a new sin is invented every hour. Along the way, she encounters a variety of very strange characters and situations.

The film stars Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, David Hemmings and Anita Pallenberg. It was directed by Roger Vadim (to whom Fonda was married at the time). Among his many other films are “And God Created Woman,” “Pretty Maids All in a Row,” and “Night Games.”

“Barbarella” is included in the 100 Most Amusingly Bad Movies Ever Made” by the founder of the Golden Raspberry Awards, John Wilson. Also, Fonda was nominated for a Golden Laurel Award for Best Female Comedy Performance.

CAC has also just installed two new exhibitions at the Art Center. “Small Spaces: Nevada Mines” features large-scale color photographs by Lee Saloutos. There will be a talk by Saloutos and a reception for the artist on April 13.

Also on view at the Center is “Marred Landscapes” recent paintings and drawings by Nina Elder. Both shows will be on view at all CAC events through late-July.

Coming on April 20, the Quebec-based Marco Calliari Sextet will roll into Fallon for a show in the Barkley Theatre. Calliari’s album, “Al Faro Est,” has been hailed as the world music album of the year by many sources in Europe. His live show are known for being high-energy and infectious that have audiences laughing, dancing an singing along. We’ll have more information on this show in the coming weeks.
