Fallon grads making their mark on collegiate sporting world

The spring college season nears its end for several former Greenwave stars.

From the diamond to the track to the rodeo arena, Fallon’s former student-athletes have been busy helping their teams this season and trying to get ready for the postseason next month.

Sara Parsons is one of three Fallon grads competing at the highest college level (Division I) as she’s in her third season playing softball at Nevada. Parsons recently participated in the Aces-Wolf Pack scrimmage last week and her team will resume league competition this weekend when Nevada hosts Colorado State.

The centerfielder is fifth on the team in batting average at .333 and she’s slugged six home runs, 11 doubles and driven in 37 runs.

Bailey Corkill and Olie Fowler, both in their final season with UNLV, are two of the top cowgirls in the West.

Corkill is second in the standings for women’s all-around while Fowler is the best goat-tying cowgirl in the region. Corkill is also third in team roping as the header, 12th in breakaway and fourth in goat tying.

Competing in the same division but with Feather River, a junior college program, are Kayla and Jordan Norcutt. Kayla Norcutt is fourth in the all-around standings, fifth in breakaway and seventh in goat tying. Jordan Norcutt is 15th in goat tying.

Not competing at Feather River but assisting the team is Sterling Lambert, who is coaching and has experience with steer wrestling, tie-down roping, bull riding and team roping.

On the track is freshman Josh Morrison who, according to the University of Tampa’s website, has competed in just one meet, the Bulls Invitational last month. Morrison finished 15th in the 800-meter run.

Back on the diamond are a handful of Fallon grads competing in baseball and softball.

Senior Kate Coffey (formerly Pinder), who married before the season, is second on Dixie State’s team in ERA at 2.97. She’s posted a 7-4 record and started in five games, pitching 52.1 innings and striking out 33.

Her kid sister, Jill, is at Lewis and Clark College and she’s experiencing a rough start as a freshman.

Pinder is second on the team in ERA at 5.60 and has started in seven games, posting a 4-5 record, which includes relief appearances. Pinder has struck out 17 batters but given up 26 walks in 45 innings.

Jenny Rechel continues to shine at Western Nevada after doubling last weekend against No. 4 Salt Lake. The Wildcats don’t return home until the end of the month after spending most of April on the road. Teammate Cassie Bell is on the disabled list.

Charlie Hejny is leading the men on the diamond as he’s piching out of the bullpen for McMurry University in Texas. The senior hurler is posting a 4.35 ERA in 13 games and has saved two games. He’s worked 20.2 innings, struck out 13 and given up 10 walks.

J.J. Boyle, a utility player for the Division II Adams State College (Colo.) baseball team, has not played.
