Photographer delivers free talk at Arts Council

The Churchill Arts Council will present a talk by photographer Lee Saloutos tomorrow afternoon in the galleries at the Art Center. The conversation will deal with the large-format color photographs that are on view in the exhibition “Small Spaces: Nevada Mines.” All of the strikingly beautiful images were taken in the interiors of abandoned mining sites in Nevada.

The talk will begin at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a reception for the artist from 5-7 p.m. Both the talk and reception are free and open to the public. For more information, you can call CAC at 775-423-1440.

Music fans are in for a real treat on April 20 when the Canadian group, the Marco Calliari Sextet, will perform at the Art Center.

Calliari was born in Quebec but is of Italian descent. Growing up he was constantly surrounded by the sounds of opera until the age of 14 when he became attracted to rock ‘n’ roll of the metal variety, forming the band Anonymous in 1989. After pursuing this for a number of years, he took off on a solo career of his own.

His original compositions draw heavily upon Italian folk music traditions but also bring vital strains of world music and jazz into the mix, along with nods to flamenco, klezmer, ska and more. His first album in this vein garnered him the Canadian Galaxy Award

His first two albums were released for the European market and were wildly successful in France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. His latest album, “Al Faro Est,” continues this tradition and has been hailed by many as the world music album of the year.

Calliari will discuss his world music making strategies at a free and open to the pubic conversation in the Center’s Art Bar at 3 p.m. This is free and open to the public.

In 2011, he performed in New York as part of the Association of Performing Art Presenters’ Conference, which is where we were able to see him, and that prompted our efforts to bring him to Fallon to perform. His concerts are infectious, high energy events and this show is not to be missed.
