Awareness walk, displays conclude Earth Week 2013

A walk to create awareness of child abuse and a day to recognize the Earth’s importance is set for Saturday.

The annual Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe and FRIENDS Family Resource Center are conducting their Pinwheel Walk Saturday morning as part of Child Abuse Awareness Month.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk follows at 9 a.m. ffrom The Millennium Park to Fox Peak.

After participants plant their pinwheels, Fox Peak’s annual celebration of Earth Day begins at 10 a.m. with fun activities for people of all ages. Sponsored by the FPST’s environmental department, Saturday’s Earth Week celebration offers different activities to show people how to make the world a better place to live, said Carmen Gonzales, environmental protection specialist.

During the week, Gonzales said people have planted community gardens, took part in a general clean-up and participated in a free flea yard sale that allowed people to give away items to others who could use them.

For the past two days, Gonzales said Dumpster Days, one of the longest running Earth Week events, allowed residents from the colony and reservation to throw away items that can’t be recycled.

Gonzales said the displays usually attract a good crowd and will have activities for the families. She said some of the activities will center on building community gardens and taking care of the desert’s water.
