Dr. Sandra Sheldon officially became the Churchill County School District’s new superintendent Thursday night after a two-year contract was approved by trustees during their regularly scheduled meeting.
Sheldon agreed to terms of a two-year deal that allows for the extention of one more year after she is evaluated by the school board in April 2014. Sheldon will receive an annual salary of $125,000 under a 260-day working contract.
After a brief discussion, trustees voted 6-0 to ratify the deal (Trustee Clay Hendrix absent, while Trustee Nona McFarlane voted by telephone).
Sheldon was formally offered the position by trustees at their April 4 meeting. Sheldon is the current superintendent for the Warden School District in Warden, Wash., where her current salary is $110,000 with a 220-day contract.
“She’s excited about coming here,” said Bus Scharmann, who has served as interim superintendent since last July after the abrupt departure of Dr. Carolyn Ross. “The only reason she’s not watching the board meeting (on the CCSD website’s streamline broadcast) was she has one of her own tonight.”
Though scheduled to start on July 1, Sheldon indicated she plans to return to Fallon in May to meet with district personnel before the summer break.
Members of the district’s Superintendent Search Community Review Committee were also recognized by trustees. Members of the committee included Joe Dahl, Becky Dodd, Darlene Dolan, Sheryl Faught, Mary Lou Lehman, Don Mello, Mark Melrose, Lonnie Moore, Eric Olsen, Robbie Johnston, Keith Boone, Gregg Malkovich and Kimi Melendy.
“The review committee did a heckuva job,” Scharmann said. “I really appreciate all the work they did. They’re kind of the unsung heroes.”
