How hot was Carson City’s July? Record-hot

Carson City roasted its way to its hottest July on record last month.

The average temperature was 74.8 degrees, and the city passed 100 three times, according to meteorologist Shane Snyder with the National Weather Service in Reno. The temperature hit 102 on July 2, 101 on July 19 and 103 on July 21.

The previous record July average was 74.5 degrees, set in 2003 and 2005.

Carson City wasn’t alone in reaching a record. Reno’s average of 80.2 degrees made it that city’s hottest recorded July, and its hottest month overall since 1888. Its previous record was 80 degrees, set in July 2007.

“Typically, it gets cooler at night there, especially in the last 15 years or so,” Snyder said of Carson City vs. Reno. Because Reno’s population is much higher, more heat gets trapped there, he said.

Relief might not be on the way. Snyder said a climate-prediction model suggests Carson City has about a 50 percent change of having above-average temperatures this month, too.
