Jazz & Beyond to include Rogers and Thompson

Cami Thompson and friends are coming to Carson City Friday evening.

Roy Rogers, along with his friends, won’t be far behind.

For folks still seeking tickets to those musical events on the kickoff weekend of Jazz & Beyond, organizers say tickets still are available online and at outlets. Carson City’s Jazz & Beyond runs Friday through Aug. 18; many events are free, but a few require tickets.

Thompson, a jazz singer well known in the region, begins the festivities during the traditional Garden Party, which is at the Governor’s Mansion this year. Tickets are $35 in advance and are available at The Purple Avocado on Curry Street or Play Your Own Music at the Carson Mall. They are $40 at the gate.

The Garden Party runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the mansion. A “Great Gatsby” theme will evoke the early 20th Century. Two Pierce-Arrow automobiles will be on hand to help capture that mood.

“We’re very excited about this,” said Elinor Bugli, who helps spearhead Jazz & Beyond each year. “Cami is telling her friends to dress in Gatsby era clothes.”

Rogers brings his slide guitar and blues/rock-oriented licks, along with the Delta Rhythm Kings, to the Bob Boldrick Theater at Carson City’s Community Center Saturday night. The show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $26 and are available at The Bead Store on William Street in Carson City and Sundance Books on California Street in Reno. In addition to being on the Jazz & Beyond bill, Rogers’ appearance is a fund raising concert for the Comstock Residents Association and its promotion of preservation in the Virginia City area.

Jazz & Beyond, an event every August since 2004, will include more than 100 musicians and 50 bands in venues throughout the capital city.
