UNCE 4-H horse show provides youth, adults with opportunity to display their riding skills

With horses, riders and a movie theme, the Washoe County 4-H Horse Program and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension present “Summer ReRuns 2013,” an open horse show and fundraiser for Washoe County 4-H horse club leaders, on Aug. 25.

This event was originally scheduled for June 29, but was postponed due to the extreme heat that week.

Open to all horses, and riders of all ages, the show will feature events in showmanship, English and western riding and timed events. The show takes place at the Lemmon Valley Horse Arena, 11400 Deodar Way (at the corner of Alaska and Chestnut) in Lemmon Valley. Registration is at 8 a.m. The show begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 4 p.m. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

Participants are asked to preregister by mail by Aug. 22. The preregistration fee is $6 per class plus a $5 nonrefundable administrative fee. Day-of-show entries are $8 per class, $2 for every change of class and a $5 nonrefundable administrative fee. All proceeds go to the Washoe County 4-H horse club leaders to help fund horse science and horsemanship training projects for 4-H youth in Washoe County.

The 4-H Program is a youth leadership development program offered by Cooperative Extension nationwide, with more than 49,000 youth participating in Nevada. Through 4-H, youth learn communications, leadership, career development, citizenship, healthy living, science, technology, engineering, math and more.

A Tufts University Study of 7,000 adolescents from diverse backgrounds across 44 states found that youth involved in 4-H are 3.3 times more likely to actively contribute to their communities, twice as likely to go to college, and 2.3 times more likely be physically active.

Additional information on Summer Reruns Horse Show: 4-H dress is not required. Appropriate attire includes long-sleeved shirt, belt and pants. Boots are required (no Fatbaby boots). The paddock judge will be at the gate to ensure proper tack and attire. No roping reigns. United States Equestrian Federation rules will be used as guidelines unless otherwise specified. ASTM-SEI helmets are required for all youth (19 and under). Approved helmets are encouraged for adults. Leadline tenders must be 14 or older.
