The days are starting to get shorter and it’s almost time to spread that bag of fall seed on the lawn.

The fall sports season returns for another chapter as Fallon enters its fourth year in the Division I-A after reaching the state level in most sports last year.

Practices begin Monday for all fall sports, except for football, which kicked off the season on Thursday with no-pads practice, and volleyball, which starts Saturday. But for the rest of the school, Monday will mark tryouts for most sports as incoming freshmen begin their Greenwave careers while the veterans return with more experience and an opportunity to showcase their leadership skills.

The volleyball team made the postseason again but fell in the regional’s first round against Dayton. Patty Daum, though, lost eight seniors from the 2012 team and should return three seniors and two sophomores as Fallon continues to battle Fernley and Dayton in the Lahontan League.

Tryouts are at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Monday at the high school gym.

The tennis teams will look to build on their breakthrough success last year as both the boys and girls qualified for the state tournament. With the new qualifying format for the smaller schools outside the Reno-Carson area, the John and Julie Moore’s clubs were able to send more players to the regional and state tournaments.

Practice for both the boys and girls teams begins on Monday at 3:15 p.m. at the high school courts.

The boys soccer team had one of its best seasons ever as Lahontan League Coach of the Year Nate Waite guided Fallon to a 10-4 record in the Division I-A. Fallon had to overcome the numbers game when at first it didn’t have enough to field teams at the varsity and junior varsity levels. But Fallon finished strong despite losing to Truckee, 1-0, in the playoffs.

Tryouts are Monday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the school’s soccer fields across from Lahontan Elementary. There will also be a parent meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.

The girls team had a successful season under first-year coach Kelly Spicer. Fallon ended the year with a 5-0 loss to Elko in the regional semifinals as the Indians qualified for the state tournament. Fallon, though, finished the year with a winning record (11-9-1) and looks poised for a repeat trip to the postseason after just missing out on state.

Mitch Overlie’s cross-country team looks to reload for this season after losing its top runners. Tanner Boone took seventh in the state meet and is now running cross country in Montana at the collegiate level while Katie O’Brien finished 12th. Elko was the team to beat last year after sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ titles and the Indians look strong to contend for a repeat.

Cross country will begin practice at the high school on Monday at 6 a.m. with a short run following by a second practice at 3 p.m. All practices will be at 3 p.m. next week, except Wednesday will include another 6 a.m. run.

Phil Pinder’s girls golf team will be looking to increase its participation after struggling for several years in fielding a complete, points-qualifying team. Fallon, though, doesn’t have much difficulty qualifying individuals for the postseason, including state, but the biggest hurdle has been numbers.

Golf practice will begin Monday at 3 p.m. at the Golf Course at Fallon.
