Sportsman’s Warehouse will be anchor tenant at Carson Mall

Sportsman’s Warehouse is set to become the Carson Mall’s anchor tenant, replacing the void left by Gottschalks five years ago.

In a July 6 story in the Nevada Appeal, city officials confirmed that a tenant had signed a lease to occupy about two-thirds of the nearly 48,000 square feet of space. However, they wouldn’t identify the incoming business.

Sportsman’s Warehouse recently submitted extensive plans for the new store at the south end of the mall to the Carson City Building Department, detailing a remodel of the entire interior. The plan calls for secure areas planned for firearms and ammunition storage and what appears to be an indoor archery range. It also includes changes to electrical, fire and sprinkler systems, electrical work and bathroom remodels. Asbestos removal is under way.

While most of the floor space is on the ground level, 4,728 square feet is office and storage space in the mezzanine of the building.

Sportsman’s Warehouse didn’t return emails and phone calls seeking comment. Joanne Holmes, representing property owner Carrington Company, declined to confirm the identity of the retailer. She said that’s up to the tenant.

Holmes did, however, announce that Carrington has purchased the building formerly occupied by the Station Grill restaurant at the north end of the mall.

Station Grill was built and operated by former Carson Station owner Clark Russell; it closed during the recession.

Holmes said Carrington has no plans yet for that building but described it as “a beautiful restaurant.”

Sportsman’s Warehouse planned a store in Carson City about five years ago, but the economy and corporate financial issues canceled that project.

Gottschalks shut down its store in Carson City in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings. Before that, the space was home to JC Penney.
