TRUCKEE — Interstate 80 near Donner Pass Road in Truckee is open to through traffic after a sinkhole shut down lanes in both directions early Friday morning, Caltrans officials said.
“The sinkhole developed in the center median around Donner Pass Road during a paving operation early this morning,” according to a 5 a.m. statement from the department. “The sinkhole is estimated to be approximately three feet in diameter and more than eight feet deep.”
One lane in each direction was closed while crews cleaned up the area. The westbound lane reopened about 10:30 am., and the eastbound lane reopened about 2:30 p.m.
What caused the sinkhole was unknown Friday morning. No one was hurt.
Pete Mann, California Highway Patrol public-information officer, said Caltrans deemed the highway “structurally safe” during the closure.
