Human remains found in Virginia City

The Storey County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that the remains found in a septic tank north of Virginia City are those of a human.

Sheriff Gerald Antinoro said the case is being treated as a homicide. The gender or identity of the deceased is unknown.

The sheriff reiterates the current residents of the home where the remains were discovered are not believed to have any involvement as the remains likely pre-date their residency.

The name of the home owner and address of the discovery are being withheld to maintain the privacy of the individuals and to preserve the integrity of the investigation.

According to Antinoro, it is believed the remains have been in the tank for as many as 25 years.
