Carson Valley Sinfonia to present fall concert

The Carson Valley Sinfonia will present its fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The program will feature three premiere performances: “To a Wild Rose” and “Harvest Dance” by local cellist and composer Marcia Stockton, and John O’Neill’s newly published “Beethoven Goes Bananas!” Other works on the program include a rondo by Purcell, the first movement of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1,” J. S. Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor,” O’Neill’s “American Pioneer Suite,” and a medley from “My Fair Lady.” Admission is free.

The Sinfonia, a student/community string orchestra, is open to qualified musicians from the greater Carson Valley area. It draws participants from South Lake Tahoe, Sparks and Yerington. Members range in age from 11 to over 90. The orchestra is an offshoot of the Carson Valley Violin School, founded in 1992 by John and Nelle O’Neill with the assistance of the Carol Franc Buck Foundation, Douglas County School District and Douglas County Recreation Department. Since its inception in 1995, the Sinfonia has premiered over 30 new compositions and arrangements by several local composers, many of which were subsequently accepted for publication and since performed by hundreds of orchestras throughout the United States and Canada. Nine of these scores received an “Editor’s Choice Award”, given annually for outstanding new publications, by J. W. Pepper, the worlds largest distributor of sheet music.
