“We beg to inform you that it is our present intention to launch the battleship Nevada about April 14, 1914. We will give you ample notice,” read the letter from the Fore River Shipbuilding Corporation. The Nevada is a ship 575-feet-long, 95 1/2 broad, protected by 13 1/2 to 18-inch armor with a sea speed of 20.5 knots.

A month ago “Smoky,” a large German Shepherd from Carson City, joined the army and left for the War Dog Reception and Training Center in California. “Smoky,” owned by Ray E. Burke before Uncle Sam took possession, is reported to like his new home fine.

Monday was a day of waiting for Frank Sinatra. He flew to Reno in a chartered plane where he was met by a personal friend, William J. Raggio of Reno, and then tried to drive to the site of the reported abduction of his son, Frank Sinatra Jr., in South Lake Tahoe, but weather conditions persisted.

Brothel owner Joe Conforte, a key witness in the criminal case against U.S. District Judge Harry Claiborne, was sentenced to 18 months in the Nevada State Prison for attempted bribery of former Lyon County District Attorney John Giomi.
