McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — Cameron Price scored 14 points to lead the Carson boys basketball team to its first win of the year, 47-46, over Arcata at the annual McKinleyville Rotary Tipoff Tournament on Friday.

After some first-game jitters during Thursday’s loss, Carson bounced back coach Carlos Mendeguia said.

“Very pleased with the we played,” he said. “We were ready to play. The kids played their hearts out.”

Alan Cohen added 11 points for the Senators.

Mendeguia said the Senators need to work on their rebounding. He said the guards need to help block out and rebound.

GIRLS

Carson 51, Faith Lutheran 48

SPARKS — Cameron Sievers hit a turnaround jump shot with less than a minute to play to give Carson the lead for good during its 51-48 win over Faith Lutheran on Friday at the High Sierra Winter Challenge at Spanish Springs.

Coach Nate Tolbert said after Sievers’ basket, Faith Lutheran hit 1-of-2 free throws but then Carly Bachmann made 1-of-2 free throws and grabbed her own rebound on the miss to run out the clock and even Carson’s record (1-1).

“We played a lot more confident,” the second-year coach said. “We cleaned up a lot of little mistakes (from Thursday’s loss).”

Savannah Smith scored 20 points, Madison Preston had eight points, Bachmann had seven points and Sievers added six.

Tolbert credited the team’s defense, in particular the play of Bachmann and Ivy Pembrook who held Faith Lutheran’s leading scorer to only four baskets and 19 points on the night.

“Everybody played,” Tolbert said. “If they didn’t score, they were out there on defense.

“It is going to take all of us (to be successful).”
