Water flushing may stir discoloration

Carson City residents may see sediment produce discoloration in their water during routine high-flow work under way over the next month, the city’s water operations manager said Tuesday.

“It’s a routine thing,” said Rit Palmer, adding that it’s “a little bit routine” because Carson City is bringing in a new water line from Douglas County as part of the regional water system. A public notice originally indicated it would be over the next couple of weeks and would be high-flow testing of the system.

Palmer, however, said it now may be into January before the work is started and completed. He said the work would be somewhat like the work done on the system in the spring to flush things out.

The notice also said the water is safe to drink and cook with, but Public Works recommends that people “not do any white laundry when you have discolored water.” Any discoloration should last only a couple of days at most, according to the notice.
