Carson High’s wrestling team is gearing up for its second team tournament of the season — the annual Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center on Friday and Saturday.

Action gets under way at 9 a.m. each day.

The competition will be stiff, but not near what last week’s Tournament of Champions was. The plus side of this tournament is that coach Paul Carter can bring several extra wrestlers, something he was unable to do last week at the TOC.

Here is the tentative line-up announced by Carter as of Monday night.

106: Brandon Basa and Casey Stevens; 113: Sammy Mercado; 120: Spencer Rogers; 126: Dominic Kinder and Alex Estrada; 132: Kyle Sharp and Garrett McDermott; 138: Nicholas Lani and Brady O’Keefe; 145: Alex Honeycutt; 152: Nolan Shine; 160: Michael Freeman and Elijah Fajayan; 170: No entry; 180: Brady Rivera; 195: Connor Sievers; 220: Sheldon Miller and Corey Jasper; Hwy: Aaron Cowee.

Carson girls play in SoCal tourney

The Carson High girls take a 5-2 record into the annual West Coast Holiday Festival in Norco, Calif.

The tournament starts today, but because of travel Carson will play twice on Friday. Carson plays Legacy-Las Vegas at 3 p.m. at Norco High School, and then will play either at 6 or 7:30 p.m. depending whether it wins or loses. A win means a 6 p.m. game against the Etiwanda-Diamond Ranch winner. A loss would put Carson against the Etiwanda-Diamond Ranch loser at 7:30.

Carson will be without Madison Preston (sprained ankle) until league play resumes in January.

Savannah Smith has been Carson’s top scorer in recent games, but coach Nate Tolbert’s team will need some offense from Carly Bachmann, Gina Peacock and Natali Salas to complement Smith.

Legacy enters the game with an 8-1 record, and boasts a line-up with six players that are 5-feet 10-inches or taller.

“We’ve got some film on them,” Tolbert said. “They beat Faith Lutheran by 12 or something like that. They have one girl (Carolina Rahkonen) who scores 18 a game. They have two other scorers — Charleea Armstrong (8.3 points, 7 rebounds) and Justice Aikins (7.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg). They look pretty solid.”

Dayton girls entered in McQueen tourney

Dayton High’s girls basketball team take its 0-3 record into the McQueen Under Armour Silver State Slam at 5 p.m. today against Castlemont-Oakland.

The Dust Devils, who lost a 38-33 thriller to Lowry last weekend, will play Damonte Ranch at 3 p.m. on Friday and Hug at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Carson JV, frosh teams in action

Carson High’s freshman and junior varsity boys and girls teams will play in the State Farm Classic starting today at North Valleys High School.

The Carson freshmen girls play at 12:15 p.m. in the small gym, while the JV girls play at 1:30 in the big gym. The freshmen boys play at 4:15 in the small gym and the JV boys play at 7 p.m. in the small gym.
