Women’s Opportunity Award

Soroptimist International of Fallon is offering a $1,000 award to a woman with primary financial responsibility for supporting her family who has financial need and would like to attend a training program or undergraduate degree program. AARP tax volunteer

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is seeking a volunteer to be a local tax site coordinator to operate a site in Fallon with two to three other volunteers.

This volunteer should have at least prepared his or her own tax returns for a few years using computer software.

The volunteer will need to attend five days of training in Carson City in the beginning of January.

During the tax season of February-April, this person would need to be available for at least one day in each week for about four hours between 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

High school equivalence classes

WNC Fallon will be offering free HSE classes for students interested in attaining their high school equivalence diploma. Registration for these classes will be held the first Monday and Tuesday of each month and is on going. You MUST attend BOTH days of registration. The first registration will be on Jan 6-7 from 9 a.m.-noon on bith days in room 204 of Pinon Hall. Testing will be be completed at this time to place students in appropriate classes.

WNC Fallon will be offering free HSE classes for students interested in attaining their high school equivalence diploma. Students will need to register, complete testing, and then plan out their class schedule.

Classes will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan 30.


Story Time

Beginning Jan. 8, Story Time will be held each Wednesday at 10:30-11:30 a.m. In addition to stories, children can make a simple craft.

The Library has hundreds of books on a wide variety of subjects for your enjoyment either in the building or at home. Studies have shown that books in the home are an important indicator of a child’s future success. So join us for a fun-filled Story Time and check out books to read at home.

Lyon County Republicans

The Lyon County Republican Central Committee (LCRCC) will hold its next meeting on Jan. 4 at the Fernley High School Library, 1300 Highway 95A, Fernley.

The meeting will begin promptly at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend and learn more about grassroots politics and meet with Republican officials.

Community Service Thrift Shop

The thrift store is located at 169 E. Center St. Hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays.

Will are closed Christmas week, Dec. 23 -27 and will open again on Dec. 30.

For 26 years our volunteers have served this community by recycling donations and using proceeds to help more than 3,000 families with emergency needs to high school graduates and nursing students. Donations of clean, resalable items during store hours are welcome.

Humboldt Shredders Thrift Store

The Fallon Humboldt Shredders is located at 290 S. Maine St. Hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Bagged clothing sales, $4 per plastic shopping bag full of clothing available on Saturdays.

We are in need of re-sellable furniture, appliances, household items and clothing. To make donations or schedule a free pickup, call 775-217-0086 or 775-423-6140.

Drop-offs are made at the store location. Proceeds help provide services to individuals with developmental disabilities and families in need through community voucher programs.


Stuf’n Such Thrift Store

The Stuf ‘n Such Thrift Store, owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 99 S. Nevada St., 775-423-6446.

The non-profit organization raises funds to benefit BCCH and other health-related events. Make your holiday shopping easy and affordable at Stuf ‘n’ Such Thrift Store.

For the month of December there will be surprise specials daily. Stuf ‘n Such has all your holiday dressing needs. Santa will be making a special appearance Saturday Dec. 14 and 21 with extra discounts for all shoppers. We also offer a frequent shopper card and excellent customer service.

Standing Through The Rain Foundation, at 190 E. Center St., shop hours are 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Thrifty Finds is a nonprofit store supporting Churchill County youth, 920 W. Williams Ave., Ste. 60A. Enter through Louie’s Dollar Plus.

Hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days per week.

Out of Egypt

Out of Egypt Thrift and Gift, providing for ongoing needs of food and hunger, is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fallon Church of the Nazarene, 121 S. Allen Rd.

American Legion

The American Legion at 90 N. Ada St., Friday night dinners are open to the public. A $5 donation is asked.
On the first Friday each month the Sons of the American Legion has a fish fry. The second Friday is Bubba Burgers and all the fixings. Third Friday dinners are canceled until further notice. The fourth and fifth Fridays are steak dinners.
Lunch is served 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Street tacos, $1 each or four for $3, are served on Thursdays. Prime rib sandwiches are served the fourth Thursday each month.

Marine Corps League

The High Desert Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the first Saturday each month at noon at the VFW Hall, 405 S. Maine St.

The League is open to all Marines, active, reserve, retired or honorably discharged, FMF Corpsman, families and friends, to participate in programs designed to help the community.

Fallon Elks

The Fallon Elks are seeking hides to help America’s Veterans. The Elks Lodge will clean and prep the hides for shipment to be tanned and made into gloves used by wheelchair bound veterans to protect their hands and for use in Veteran’s hospital for leather crafting, recreational programs.

To ensure the hide will last until the Elks can prepare it for shipment, roll up the hide — hair side out and either drop it in the green barrel near the back door of the Lodge or call Don Coleman at 775-427-9222 for pick up.


Hospice groups

XL Hospice Drop-In Grief Groups meet the second Mondays at 5 p.m. and third Tuesdays at noon at the XL Hospice office 570 S. Maine St. No charge or registration is necessary.


Hearts of Gold Quilters

The Hearts of Gold Quilters meets every Thursday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way. All quilters are welcome.

We are a group of 40 busy quilters who meet weekly to make donation quilts, as well as working on our own projects. An average of 80 quilts per year are donated to our community.


Serendipity Bookstore

The Serendipity Bookstore at 507 S. Maine St. features used books for sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Proceeds benefit the Churchill County Library.

The Bookstore currently has a handful of first edition signed mysteries for sale. Stop by and take a look at these and other books of interest.


Domestic Violence Support Group

Domestic Violence Support Group meets each Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. Call 775-423-1313 for location.

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is located inside the front lobby of Banner Churchill Community Hospital, 801 E. Williams Ave. Hours are 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Rainbow Treasures Gift Shop is owned and operated by Banner Churchill Community Hospital Auxiliary, a nonprofit organization. MOPS meeting

The Mothers of Preschoolers group meets 10 a.m.-noon the second and fourth Tuesday each month at Parkside Bible Fellowship.

Fallon Tea Party

The Fallon Tea Party meets the first Tuesday and third Thursday each month at the Churchill County Library annex, 7 p.m., South Maine and Fairview (behind the bookstore).

Fallon Elks Lodge

Dinner — The Fallon Elks Lodge, 93 W. Center St., serves dinner the first and third Friday of each month. Dinners start at 6 p.m. and cost $7 for adults, and $4 for children under 12. Breakfasts — Breakfast is served on the last Sunday of the month from 8-10 a.m.

Square dancing

The Oasis Squares, Fallon’s square dance club meets each Friday, 7-9 p.m., Highland Estates, 570 N. Sherman St. Experienced dancers are always welcomed. Come dance in a square and make a circle of friends.

Elks bingo

Fallon Elks Bingo, 93 W. Center St., is being discontinued due to lack of participation.

We regret that we cannot continue the Bingo Games when only a few people attend.

‘Celebrating Us’ art project

Artists, photographers, artisans of all genre are invited to showcase their work in the “Celebrating Us” project, a joint venture of the Churchill County Museum and the county.

Exhibits are on-going and ever-changing.

ESL In-Home program

ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada is a nonprofit organization that provides English tutoring at no cost through the help of volunteer tutors.

Child support enforcement

Child support enforcement services are available through the Churchill County District Attorney’s office. The staff may be able to help establish parentage and help obtain a child support order to include medical support. Pick up an application at the Churchill County Child Support Office at 165 N.
