Christmas at the Orphans Home. We were not present to see Santa Claus descend among the orphans on Christmas Eve. There was a worthy spirit among the children whom the little ones of the home ran to meet and about whose hands and coattails they linger, caressing as though he were their own natural parent.

Of late years it has become fashionable for newspaper publishers to issue big blanket sheets on New Year’s Day which contains nothing but the paid puffery of business houses and a number of tedious, long-winded stories incidental of the seasons. The Appeal will have none of it. Our prize holiday story will by Maj. John Dennis of the Times-Review. It is a tale of love and crime unequaled for strong dramatic situation and tearful pathos entitled “The Red Roarers of Tuscarora.”

About three weeks ago, a well-known Carson family left for a brief visit to California with little thought of their Boston terrier dog, presumed to be on the grounds when they left, in care of the people of the springs. When they returned, they found the little dog left in an upstairs room of the home for 17 days. He was alive and almost a skeleton. Being a vital little dog, he responded well and will recover.

“I don’t trust him with all these nurses,” was the statement of Mrs. Santa Claus, as she mumbled following her ebullient husband on his rounds of the Carson-Tahoe Hospital. On normal days, Santa is a Douglas County Sheriff’s corporal.
