Wave nabs 2 placers at SNC

Another tournament under the belt and the Greenwave wrestling team is beginning to get a clear picture of the competition.

Fallon placed 30th out of 82 teams at last weekend’s Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center as Clovis West (Calif.) won the two-day tournament with 258 points. Lowry was the highest placing Nevada team with a seventh-place finish at 131 points. Among all Northern Nevada teams, Fallon finished seventh with 62 points and third among Division I-A teams behind Lowry and Spring Creek (84).

Two Greenwave grapplers placed in the top eight as Clay Amezquita (126 pounds) placed eighth and Sam Goings (138) was seventh.

Goings opened with four straight wins to set up a quarterfinal match against Benecia’s (Calif.) Joseph Hunt.

Goings pinned Reed’s Shemar Wiggins to open the tournament and proceeded to pin his next two opponents. Goings scored a 12-2 major decision over Battle Mountain’s Christian Perez before falling in the last period of his quarterfinal bout against Hunt.

Goings defeated Spring Creek’s Sheldon Davis, 9-3, lost to Folsom’s (Calif.) Jason Bergquist before beating Redmond’s (Ore.) Mitch Willett, 7-3, to take seventh.

Amezquita, meanwhile, won his first two matches before dropping into the consolation round.

Amezquita pinned his first opponent before dropping Battle Mountain’s Andrew Cox, 9-6. Amezquita fell in his third bout but ran off three-straight wins including a 3-2 win over Carson’s Anthony Estrada. Spanish Springs’ Tyler Poalillo sent Amezquita into the seventh-place match where the Fallon grappler lost 8-7 to Del Oro’s (Calif.) Clay Shropshire.

Dakota Schelling fell short of placing after scoring two-straight wins at 170. He ran into a familiar opponent, Lowry’s Beau Billingsley, in his third match, which he lost by 16-3 major decision. Schelling, though, pinned Granite Bay’s (Calif.) Mitchell Morse and Del Oro’s (Calif.) Brandon Jeppson in the consolation round but fell to Visa Del Lago’s (Calif.) Ben Johnson in his final bout.

Trae Workman (145) scored two-straight wins over out-of-state opponents to open the tournament, but fell to Lassen’s Skyler Ingwerson in the first period. Workman, though, pinned Piedra Vista’s (N.M.) in the second period before dropping a 4-2 decision to Lebanon’s (Ore.) Austin Kleint.

Anthony Sabatino (126) missed out on placing just like the Reno Tournament of Champions. After winning his first match, Sabatino lost by major decision (13-1) before pinning Damonte Ranch’s Brandon Blake in the consolation bracket. He recorded another pin before losing by a 13-0 major decision to McQueen’s Austin Sweet.

Dylan McAfee (113) started well after winning by injury default. After being pinned, McAfee rebounded by pinning Wooster’s Mason Dun in the first period. McAfee, though, fell in his next match to finish a 2-2 run.

After losing his first match by pin, Jordan Schultz (145) came back with a 2-0 win over Carson’s Alexander Honeycutt. Schultz, though, was ousted by McQueen’s Jon Paulk.

Terry White (106) went 1-2 after opening the tournament with a loss by pin. White responded with a 5-4 win in the consolation’s first round before being pinned in his last match.

Robert White lost his first two matches to end his tournament run prematurely. Competing at 132, Robert White was pinned in the second period of his opening match and then fell to Lowry’s Gabe Molina to end the day.

Fallon continues its tournament schedule with a two-day event Friday and Saturday at Sparks High School.
