A 49-year-old Carson City man was sentenced Monday morning to up to 12 years in prison on one count of felony eluding a peace officer and one count of sale of a controlled substance.
Mark Garner had served five prison sentences and 18 jail sentences after being convicted of 11 felonies, according to the Carson City District Attorney's Office.
The defense argued Garner should either be allowed to go through a court-approved substance abuse program or receive a lighter prison sentence because of his age and methamphetamine use, according to the District Attorney's office.
The district attorney argued an extended prison sentence would protect Carsonites and give Garner a chance to get clean and sober up.
District Court Judge James Russell said there is nothing society can do with a person like Garner except place him in prison, to protect the community, according to the district attorney's office.
