Dayton High School students will combine their artistic and culinary talents to offer the community a romantic night out for Valentine's Day.

"It should be a really fun evening," said art teacher Malaynia Wick. "They'll have some great food, and it's going to be really beautiful."

The Valentine's Lollapalooza will feature desserts and appetizers prepared by students in the high school's culinary arts class, including angel food and devil's food cupcakes. Appetizers will include a fruit platter, caprese salad and stuffed mushrooms.

"It should be of the same quality you would get at any restaurant in the Reno-Tahoe area," said David Palmer, culinary arts teacher. "People are definitely getting a value for their dollar."

The Lollapalooza will serve as opening night for the Dayton Community Center's new art exhibit, showcasing emerging artists' work.

Art ranging from first-year students' work through advanced art will be displayed, Wick said. Last year, Dayton High students earned 13 awards in the Nevada Museum of Art Scholastic Art competition and also won awards in the Congressional Art Competition.

"I'm happy the community can see what they're working on," she said. "It's a chance for them to break out of the classroom and let the world see what they're doing."

Work on display will include paintings, drawings and sculptures.

"It's good, high-quality, well-thought-out work," Wick said. "I think people will love to look at it."

Proceeds from the Lollapalooza will be used to support programs at the high school, and the Dayton Task Force is helping to fund the event.

The exhibit will remain open at the community center from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays until Feb. 15. There is no entry fee.
