The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.SILVER DOLLAR: To Click Bond President Collie Hutter, who was honored with a STEP Award for manufacturing achievement in science, technology, engineering and production. The inaugural Women in Manufacturing STEP Awards went to just 122 females from the Manufacturing Institute, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the University of Phoenix and Deloitte.“I believe that the best thing a man or woman can say at the end of a day is that they are proud of what they accomplished that day,” Hutter said, taking the award in stride. “And what greater accomplishment is there than to have made something beautiful and functional?”The maker of rivet-less fastening systems for airplanes, other transport vehicles or surfaces requiring mechanical/adhesive bonding is based in Carson City.WOODEN NICKEL: While we are all for safety, a couple of bills introduced last week in the Legislature exemplify far-reaching government. First was a bill from Sen. Joe Hardy, R-Boulder City, that calls for fining parents of children who don’t wear helmets while riding “longboards,” oversized skateboards with bigger wheels that go faster than standard ones. The second was Democratic Las Vegas Assemblyman Harvey Munford’s bill that would make it illegal for pedestrians to read, browse the Internet or enter data with hand-held devices while crossing roadways.Accidents do happen. However, the time, effort and cost to enforce these laws, if passed, would be better spent focusing on dangerous criminals. If these bills pass, what’s next? Requiring pedestrians to wear helmets for safety’s sake?SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City’s Grant Davis for signing a record contract with Manhattan Records. Davis, 16, is in Los Angeles recording new songs. The record company says Davis will tour this summer.
