Bowling balls rumbled down the alleys at Carson Lanes Saturday at a kickoff event for the Carson City Relay for Life 2013.“We had a great turnout,” said Melissa Reed-Olszewski, community relations manager with Northern Nevada office of the American Cancer Society.Eighty-eight people on 15 teams bowled and a cancer survivor gave an inspirational speech to those attending, Reed-Olszewski said.In addition to the entry fee, the program received 20 percent of the proceeds for the day at the restaurants in the Carson Lanes Center. With numbers still coming in Saturday evening, a dollar figure will not be known until next week.“Everything goes to cancer research,” Reed-Olszewski said. The Relay for Life itself will take place July 13-14. Team members take turns walking the track through the night to raise funds for cancer research, celebrate those who have survived cancer, and remember those who were lost to the disease. The Carson City Relay for Life will take place at Carson High School.Even though Relay for Life is five-months away, the fundraising goes on all year. The bowling party is just the first for 2013. Details for the next event have not been set yet. For more information, go to www.relayforlife.org/carsoncitynv.
