When a Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper working his route on Interstate 80 in Fernley pulled over the red Ford Escort, it was for a simple registration violation Wednesday morning. When the trooper saw the steering column was broken apart, he may have suspected something was a bit off. When the driver gave a false name and could not produce a driver's license, it was time to make an arrest, according to NHP.
The trooper arrested Andrew Cook, 23, of Anderson, Calif. and his passenger, Amber Cecil, 19, also from Anderson.
By the time the trooper had handcuffed Cook, the station wagon had been confirmed stolen out of Shasta County, Calif. Cook was wanted on eight felony warrants out of Shasta County, although what for has not been identified, according to a press release from NHP. Four of the warrants had a bail amount of $250,000 a piece and the other four had bail at $25,000. Cook was charged with driving without a driver's license, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and obstructing or delaying a peace officer. The bail total on the warrants was $1.1 million, according to NHP.
Cecil was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both Cook and Cecil were booked into the Lyon County Jail in Yerington.
TWO MEN ARRESTED IN SILVER SPRINGS
In a similar but slightly different case in Silver Springs Thursday, two men were arrested on warrants, one of which was a fugitive from justice warrant out of Texas.
Detectives, deputies and Lyon County Juvenile Probation responded to an address in the 3200 block of Second Street, for two different investigations, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.
Juvenile Probation was investigating a potential truancy issue with a probationer and the detectives were following up a lead that a man, wanted on a Texas fugitive-from-justice warrant, was also living at the house. In addition, the man was believed to be a sex offender required to register with Lyon County who had not.
Detectives arrested James Adcock, 27, on a charge of sex offender failure to register and on a Texas fugitive-from-justice warrant with a no-bail hold. Brandon Quinonez, 21, of Fernley was arrested on a Fernley grand-larceny-of-a-motor-vehicle warrant and on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $11,137.
