Man pleads guilty in Brunswick Canyon death

A Carson City man charged with involuntary manslaughter changed his plea to guilty Tuesday morning in district court.Kennith James Johnson, 47, abandoned his two friends, whom he had been shooting and drinking in Brunswick Canyon, after one had been accidentally shot in the jaw.Anthony Kelich, who was handling the rifle when it went off, pleaded guilty in November 2011 to charges of involuntary manslaughter and illegal handling of a firearm. After Kelich shot Mike Scott in the face, Johnson jumped into the truck he had driven to Brunswick Canyon in and fled the scene, according to court documents.Johnson told the judge he felt it was in his best interest to plead guilty.“It’s been difficult for him to understand” that he could be convicted of involuntary manslaughter even though “he did not fire the shot,” Defense Attorney Ben Walker said in court.After Judge James Russell questioned him, Johnson admitted guilt.Johnson will be sentenced April 1.• A Carson City man was sentenced to nine months in jail Tuesday morning after he had pleaded guilty to statutory sexual seduction by a person over 21.Ivan Botello, 26, along Jesus Roque-Arredondo and Eriberto Roque-Sanchez, pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year-old girl who gave birth to a girl in September 2012.Judge James Russell sentenced Botello to a suspended sentence of two to five years. As a term of his up-to five year probation, Botello will have to serve 9 months in the Carson City Jail.“This deserves some jail time,” Russell said. It was Botello’s first felony.The girl’s father took the stand to testify how the crime had impacted him and his daughter.“He used my daughter like a dirty object,” the father said, speaking to judge James Russell through an interpreter. “He gave her alcohol ... This man is dangerous on the streets. Look at me! I’m shaking. I see my daughter crying every night. Sir, I am a single parent. They came and changed my life.”• Sean Holloman, 28, who had pleaded guilty to statutory sexual seduction by a person under 21, had his sentencing deferred for a year by Russell and the charge moved down to a misdemeanor charge of indecent exposure.Holloman was originally arrested on May 29 on two felonies after someone called the sheriff’s office to report a man and woman having sex in the shared backyard of a residential area in east-central Carson City. Russell said Holloman was just as much a victim as the victim, a 15-year-old girl at the time, was.“I think we have to be fair and just in this case,” he said.Holloman’s behavior was partly because he has a form of Autism known as Asperger’s syndrome, Russell said citing a report.• A Carson City man charged with second degree murder with an enhancement of failure to seek or render medical aid in the overdose death of a Carson City woman was arraigned in district court.Angel Altamirano, 21, allegedly gave or sold heroin to Beth Rubke, 23, who then died on Oct. 17 of a heroin overdose.A trial date was set for June 25-28.
