Senators introduce lands bill

Nevada Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller have introduced the Douglas County Conservation Act of 2013.

They said the purpose of the legislation is not only to provide for sensible development in Douglas County, but to promote conservation and improve recreational opportunities.

“The bill is a culmination of more than a dozen years of work between state, local and federal officials,” said Heller, a Republican. “I am pleased that this bill will provide economic opportunity while preserving the rural character of the Carson Valley.”

Reid, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate, said the plan is a balanced piece of legislation promoting development, restoring homeland to the Washoe Tribe and protecting cultural and natural resources. He commended the community for their work on the plan.

The act includes provisions for disposal of appropriate federal lands while conveying certain cultural sites to the Washoe Tribe. It also is aimed at improving recreational opportunities in Douglas County, and allowing for better flood control and infrastructure management by making federal lands available to the county. It is intended to improve protection of safe grouse habitat and designates the Burbank Canyon a wilderness area in Douglas County.
