Independence Day events

The following events are planned on and around Independence Day.

Today

Carson City: Family Night at the Carnival, offered by Carson City Toyota Scion and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, is set for 5-10 p.m. Rides cost $1. The RSVP fair continues through July 6. A coupon for $5 worth of rides is available at http://www.nevadaruralrsvp.org/uploads/9296688R%20CCToyota.pdf. The fair is one of three fundraising fairs during the year to support the Home Companion, Respite Care and Lifeline programs that assist Carson City seniors in remaining independent and in their own homes.

Thursday

Carson City: A fireworks show offered by Carson City Toyota Scion and Cumulus Radio is set for dusk at Mills Park.

Virginia City: The Fourth of July Celebration includes the Fourth of July Parade, the Red White and YOU Wine Walk, a period-costumed baseball game in Miners Park where kids can swim in the newly remodeled pool and the Comstock Cowboys Second Amendment Concert, culminating with a 25-minute fireworks display. Following is a schedule of events.

9 a.m.: Booth opens, selling raffle tickets, wine walk tickets and event T-shirts

11 a.m.: Devil’s Gate Gunfighters comedy show at C and Union streets

Noon: Parade begins; it’s expected to last about 90 minutes

1 p.m.: Red White and YOU Wine Walk begins; it continues until 6 p.m.

1:30 p.m.: Larry Elliott, as Uncle Sam, performs music and stories

1:30 p.m.: Shoot-Out on the Hill, across from the Fourth Ward School. Tickets are $30 each and limited to the first 200 participants. Each person will be shooting real guns with real bullets; 10 pistol shots, 10 rifle shots, and 6 shotgun. Use of guns, ammunition, and safety equipment is included in fee. Must be at least 21 years old. Tickets will be sold for $30 each beginning 10 a.m. at ticket booths in front of the Ponderosa and the Bucket of Blood saloon. Shuttles will be available.

6 p.m.: Free Second Amendment celebration concert in Delta parking lot

7 p.m.: Raffle and live auction

Dusk: Fireworks

Silver Springs: People can learn about the history of Fort Churchill State Historic Park, sample hardtack and hear about what life was like for soldiers stationed here in the 1860s at 10 a.m. This program will be held beside the museum, next to the cannons.

Genoa: Chicken barbecue at the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, noon to 6 p.m. Cost, $12. The Sierra Philharmonic League sponsors the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra on July 4 in the Mormon Station State Historic Park. Festivities begin at 1 p.m., concert at 4:15 p.m. Information, 782-2590.

• Pops in the Park at Mormon Station Park, 4:15 p.m. Festivities start at 1 p.m. and features the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra with Jason Altiereri conducting. Other entertainment includes Carson Chamber Singers, Reno Philharmonic Chorus, Chorus of the Comstock, the roving violinist John O’Neill, the percussion petting zoo, Doc-O and Squeeky the Clown, a silent auction and the firing of live cannons with the 1812 Overature. Sponsored by the Sierra Philharmonic League.

Minden: Hometown Celebration Fourth of July 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Minden Park. Bike decorating at 10:30 a.m. for the Patriotic Park parade at 11:30 a.m. The Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, conducted by Elizabeth Eubanks, presents their Independence Day concert 12:30 p.m. Bounce house, water games, free apple pie and ice cream. Gardnerville: Freedom 5K Fun Run/Walk and Yankee Doodle Chalk Artfest” 7 a.m.- noon at Heritage Park. Come dressed in patriotic colors and enjoy a run/walk around Heritage Park, Trail and Track. Cost to register for the Fun Run/Walk is $30 the day of event. Families with children under 12 can visit the”Family Chalk Doodle Fun Zone” free from 8 a.m.-noon. The Carson Valley Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast 7-11 a.m. The $6 breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage. Information, 782-8027.

• Valley Christian Fellowship church in the park 10 a.m. July 7 at Lampe Park. Horseshoe and volleyball tournaments, bounce house, barbecue. Information: 775-265-4100.

Gardnerville Ranchos: The eighth annual Glenwood Independence Day parade is 11:30 a.m. July 4 on Glenwood Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Staging is at 11 a.m. Information: tracy4573@charter.net.

Stateline: The Star Spangled Fourth Lights on the Lake begins about 9:45 p.m. at Tahoe’s South Shore. The fireworks are launched from offshore barges.

Thursday-Sunday

Carson City: Visitors to the Nevada State Railroad Museum can ride a train pulled by Virginia & Truckee steam locomotive No. 25 and photograph locomotives and cars on display. Train rides are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Outdoor exhibits are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum’s interpretive center and store will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket prices range from $4 to $15.

Also, the museum, in collaboration with the Center for Railroad Photography & Art based in Madison, Wis., will prevent the free photo exhibit “Steam: An Enduring Legacy, the Railroad Photographs of Joel Jensen.” The Ely artist’s work will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Wabuska Depot at the museum.

Carson City: Carson Station is hosting the second annual Rib Cookoff. It features a cooking competition, live music, rib eating contest, kids games and vendors.

Saturday

Silver Springs: A night hike at Fort Churchill State Historic Park is set for 8:30 p.m. Participants can look for scorpions and learn constellations. The hike is limited to 30 participants, and reservations are required. To make reservations, call 775-577-4880 or send an email to bucklandstation@hotmail.com. This hike is about 0.6 mile long and will last about an hour.

Carson City: Admission to the Nevada State Railroad Museum will be free all day.
