A Storey County Commission amendment to Comstock Mining’s special-use permit will allow the company to operate and grow more efficiently, its president said Wednesday.

The county planning commission’s action in late June and county commissioners’ action Tuesday allow for expansion of land area and processing capacity, according to a news release quoting Corrado De Gasperis, company president and CEO.

The firm received unanimous approval from the commission to expand processing capacity through an application to amend an existing special-use permit, the release states. The amendments expanded the land area involved and modified uses allowed on the firm’s existing ore-processing facility on American Flat Road in nearby Gold Hill.

County officials and the mining company face continued opposition from the Comstock Residents Association and others. That group and colleagues demonstrated recently at the Comstock annual shareholders’ meeting in Reno to protest the mining operation.
