Carson High School students fare well in national history competition

Carson High students had an impressive showing at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland, which concluded Thursday.

Jesica Cacho, Erica Gallegos and Jake Jones made it to the final round in the group documentary category, placing 13th in the nation. Theirs was among more than 100 entries in the category.

This group also was awarded the best Nevada entry at the national award ceremony, beating out all other Northern and Southern Nevada entries in all categories.

Kayla Kennison competed in the individual exhibit and is already planning for a future entry.

“These students represented Carson High and Carson City School District with honor, integrity and hard work,” said teacher Nicole Fagundes.

She said students also endured high humidity, torrential downpours, flood warnings, no air conditioning in the dorms, evacuating an airplane for a tornado warning, “hunkering down” in the Maryland airport to avoid the tornado and other adventures.

“They did this all with a smile and a sense of humor,” Fagundes said. “I was consistently impressed with their poise and ability to roll with the conditions. They all have stories for a lifetime.”
