Fallon trio heads to nationals

One Fallon cowboy and two cowgirls aim to put on a show at the 2013 National High School Finals Rodeo.

The annual event takes flight July 14-20 in Rock Springs, Wyo., and features the best high school cowboys and cowgirls in the country.

Rachel Hendrix qualified in four events, while her brother, Cord, earned three spots at nationals. Sydney Howard, meanwhile, joins the Hendrix’s as the lone qualifiers for nationals after taking fourth in goat tying at last weekend’s Nevada State High School Finals Rodeo at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

Billy Quillan and Jes Tews each earned an invitation to the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca from June 30 through July 6. Both cowboys made the cut in team roping, although they did not partner. Quilan and Jay Guerrero teamed together, while Tews partnered with Blain Jensen.

As for the events, Randi Buchanan won the barrel racing and was followed by Brittany Berry, Ashley Martinkus and Rachel Hendrix. Buchanan added another win in pole bending as Hannah Edwards, Aspyn Civil and Kylie Hargett placed second through fourth, respectively.

Howard, meanwhile, stumbled in the goat tying as the soon-to-be Fallon senior came into state ranked No. 1. She left state in fourth, behind winner Savannah Montero, Hayley Dalton-Estes and Tess Turk.

Dalton-Estes added a win in breakaway roping followed by Buchanan, Turk and Rachel Hendrix. Howard placed sixth, and earned a berth at SSIR.

In team roping, Kamryn Boucher and Wyatt Thomas took first, while Dalton-Estes and Jesse Estill placed second. The Hendrix’s finished third followed by Turk and Buchanan.

Boucher won his second event in the tie-down competition, while Dakota Feyder, Clayton Combs and Thomas finished second through fourth, respectively.

In rough stock, Cord Hendrix took the top spot in bull riding, Wyatt Denny won bareback, and Clay Stremler captured the saddle bronc crown.

Anthony Barrington (second), Garrett Crist (third) and Cam Benbough (fourth) rounded out the bull riding. Kyler Jones and Charlie Neal placed second and third, respectively in bareback, while Clay Gillespie and Jake Thacker tied for fourth. Both Gillespie and Thacker qualified for nationals.

Cole Stremler, Chance Guerrero and Daniel Winans made the cut in saddle bronc.

In steer wrestling, Feyder took first followed by Guerrero, Denny and Jay Guerrero.

With her strong state performance, Buchanan locked up the All-Around cowgirl title, while Rachel Hendrix was the reserve cowgirl. Denny earned the boys All-Around title and Feyder was the reserve.
