BLM workshop focuses on Fish Springs horses

A workshop to discuss a herd of wild horses living in Fish Springs is 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City District office.

The wild horses are living several miles outside the Pine Nut Herd Management Area south of Carson City. The wild horses have migrated about 10 miles outside the management area to the Fish Springs area and are affecting private property owners. The workshop will begin with a short presentation, and then will include breakout sessions.

“The purpose of the meeting is to work together on solutions for the wild horses residing outside the HMA at Fish Springs,” said Sierra Front Field Manager Leon Thomas. “In order to have a well- rounded discussion, we are hoping all interested residents will attend.”

The Bureau of Land Management rounded up 67 wild horses living outside the management area in November 2010, including a band living in Fish Springs.

The horse management area for the Pine Nuts is centered in the northern part of the mountain chain that runs east of Carson Valley and Eagle Valley. Only a small part of the area extends into Douglas County.
